I have still been drinking milk (full fat) and I would like to find a palatable alternative that's healthy. I'm not sure out of almond, hemp, coconut milk drink, or oat milk would be best - has anyone any views on which is the healthiest? I'd like to find something I can have in tea or coffee, or even as a hot drink on its own for bedtime.

I'm also wondering whether it would be good to cut down on having wholemilk yogurts, but I don't know what would be an affordable substitute. Coconut yogurt sounds lovely, but the last time i looked it was pricey. Any ideas would be welcome - thanks for any help.

I use cream in both tea and coffee (tiny dash of cream - far less than if it were milk).

Probably the best thing for you to do is to look at the carbs in each different type of milk, choose your preference, and then test to see how your body reacts to it.

I dislike the tastes of soya, almond and hemp, but you may love them. Oat and rice milk spike me (and aren't LC :) ). Almond was OK, but not nice enough to be a staple - so I returned to dairy. And introduced herb teas.

There is a thread around here somewhere about making your own coconut yogurt - much cheaper than buying.

You can also make kefir from milk, goatsmilk, or coconut milk, if you like.

Thanks for your reply Brunneria - sorry for the delay in my reply. I'm trying almond milk now, and am seeing if I get used to it - although the idea of cream in tea and coffee sounds nice.

Thanks also for the tip about the thread for making coconut yogurt - i will check that out.

I have soya milk in tea - but only because I used to be vegan and got used to it then, and although I'm now an omnivore I still prefer it. I have double cream in coffee (it's lower carb than single).

Another option might be lactose free milk, but I've not ever tried it. The full fat type is lowest in carbs.

I tried unsweetened almond milk in tea and found it too oily but I rarely drink "normal" tea, as I've always drunk a lot of herb teas instead, which obviously don't need milk. I use the almond milk as well as double cream in coffee and cocoa (sometimes in combination with the almond milk, which is fairly low fat). But if you opt to try it be careful to check as it comes in both sweetened and unsweetened varieties. I actually prefer hazelnut milk for my coffee, but I've only ever found a sweetened version. :(

I compromise with yoghurt and have always (from well prior to diabetes diagnosis) eaten the full fat version of Fage Total Greek yoghurt, as this contains various live, active yoghurt cultures - but it may be slightly higher carb than some other brands. Many other low carbers here recommend this one too. Someone recent has recommended CoYo coconut yoghurt but I've not been able to try this yet.

I have the Alpro Wholebean soya milk in tea and coffee (used to have full fat milk until I saw the carb content). I find it tastes ok although you need a lot more of it. Also tried the Alpro soya yoghurt which is ok for a dessert but not as nice as real yoghurt.. my shop now takes twice as long as I read the labels on everything (or get the other to as his eyesight is better!). While in Florida on hols I got hooked on Starbucks filter coffee with half and half(half cream half milk) which was great and didn't spike me at all..if only it was available in the UK...

I too use double cream in coffee. Some people who like milk to drink use watered-down double cream, which apparently tastes fine. I bought myself a yogurt maker and make yogurt with double cream instead of milk (using a spoonful of full-fat live yogurt as the starter), which my whole family finds delicious.

Really like the idea of making yogurt with double cream - as I have a yogurt maker too, which has been sitting unused in the cupboard. Also my local supermarket often reduces pots of cream. Thanks for sharing.

I'd stick with cream but of the other milks, oat (to me) is the most agreeable to the taste of a cup of tea.

Going backcountry on foot or skis? Take UHT cream. Worth the weight. Way tastier than powdered milk.

Hi I've been on low carb since October and I use goats milk most major supermarkets stock it although it is about £1.50 per litre. I cannot tell the difference between semi skimmed and goats milk, and I have it in tea, coffee and use it in cooking.
