MiniMed 640....help

It occurred to me in hindsight that the error messages in CareLink are not all that bad at least when it comes to pointing out the most likely very basic possible failures. So I went through and tried to extract some of these for reference.

Note: The example text and/or screenshots below were obtained using the previous gen Contour Next Link meter together with a Paradigm Revel 723 Medtronic pump. I think you'd get the same results using a Contour Next Link 2.4 and a MiniMed 640G, but I don't actually know this.

My understanding is the stages of the CareLink upload progress proceeds as listed below.
  1. CareLink searches for and connects to the upload device, the Contour Next Link meter, on your computer.
  2. After finding the upload device (meter), CareLink searches for the pump with the serial number it was asked to upload.
  3. If the pump is found, the upload begins. The progress of the upload is displayed until it completes.
  4. After the pump upload to to the computer has completed. The CareLink web application transfers the data to Medtronic's data servers for storage in your CareLink account.
Below is a list of some likely potential problems and the corresponding error message CareLink will display if it happens. Please let me know if you think anything needs more explanation. I also have screen caps of the error messages which I can post. I figured that might actually be more confusing so I tried it without the pics first. ;)

Problem: Upload device (Contour Next Link meter) is either missing or just not properly plugged into your computer.
If the CareLink web app can't find the upload device (Contour Next Link meter) on your computer, then the error message below is displayed. (This is the problem I originally thought using the USB extension cable might be "fixing").
CONTOUR NEXT LINK not found. Please check the CONTOUR NEXT LINK connection to your computer.

Problem: Pump and the upload device can't talk to each other.
If CareLink can connect to the upload device/meter, then the status message "Looking For Pump #nnnnnn" is displayed.

But if the pump is located too far from the Contour Next Link or is hidden behind something which blocks the radio signals between the pump and the upload device, CareLink will display the error message

Pump #nnnnnn Not Found. Please check your pump battery status. Reposition your pump and CONTOUR NEXT LINK closer together. Verify that your pump has no alarms or errors, no Bolus or Temp Basal is in progress. Verify that your pump serial number is #nnnnnn.

Problem: Pump is found, but an operation is in progress which prevents the data from being uploaded.

The previous error message advice about checking for alarms, errors, et cetera may actually be a bit misleading. In my experience, the error message you are more likely to see if you perhaps forgot you have a Temp Basal or Bolus in progress on your pump is the one below.
Pump Couldn't Be Suspended. Please clear your pump of alarms or errors and cancel any Bolus or Temp Basal in progress

Problem: Pump is found and uploaded, but the data cannot be sent to the server.
If either your connection to the Internet is down or just the Medtronic servers have crashed and can no longer be reached, you are most likely going to see the error below. But first the entire pump will be (very slowly) uploaded and the "Sending Data to the system" status message has been displayed for about 30 seconds.
Error... Transfer Failed: an error occurred sending the request. The device data was not received by the system.

It just wasn't finding and subsequently connecting to the pump. Thanks for your reply, very informative indeed! :-) I will have another go tonight without using the lead and will let you know how I get on! Thanks for all your help. :-)

You seem to be saying that you got the "Pump Not Found" error message (below) from CareLink when you plugged your Contour meter directly into your computer.

That usually means the radio connection between the meter and the pump could not be established either because the pump was "too far" away (for some value of "too far" :wacky:). But it can also happen if there is radio interference or something (your body?) is between the pump and the meter.

If it's not any of those then I'm not sure what the problem was. But if you can get as far as the point where the CareLink software is looking for the pump, then it would appear the Contour meter is properly connected to your computer.

Maybe it's just easier to place the Contour meter closer to your pump when you connect it to your computer using the USB extension cable? :wacky:  :banghead: :nailbiting: ;)
