Starting out? 7 if you eat 3 meals. One before each meal and 2 hours thereafter for those meals and one when you wake

Assuming you have not had any snacks, the pre evening meal test will give you a reasonable indication of your "fasting" level rather than testing when you wake up which, when starting out, seems to vary randomly. Once you have found that your response to a particular meal is consistent, you don't always need to test that meal. I normally have egg and bacon for breakfast, I don't bother to test afterwards. If I was trying some low carb pancakes instead for a change I would definitely test.

Poor grammar, bullying and drunks.
At the early stages when having to readings for every food I was testing 7/8 times but now with a goodly list of 'safe' meals I test 4 times per day and on the days I have a fry up for breakfast which, for me, is a safe meal I will test just twice on the evening meal. I personally do not do fbg for different reasons.
