Hi just a general question I am haveing a minor op next week not sure if its going to be local or general anaesthetic but they said not to eat just incase it's general , so if I don't eat what do I do about my injection in the morning do I have a couple of units or none at all ? Thanks

Re: Minor operation

Hi Jackie

On the two occasions I've had a general anaesthetic I just took by basal insulin as normal but no quick-acting as I was fasting.

You would need to be sure that your basal insulin is correct so if you're not sure, maybe do a dry run beforehand, by skipping breakfast and QA insulin to see what happens.

Re: Minor operation

If your basal is set right, then your BS shouldn't vary by more than 1.5 during the night, and then hopefully into the next day too. What you really want to avoid is going hypo and having to eat to correct it when you should be fasting for the possible anaesthetic.

Hi Jackie, If it was me I would want to know what I was going to have, either GA or local. I know you have said its minor so would local be better for you and have the hospital told you what time you are having the procedure?

I have just had a GA and my Op was in the afternoon, so I had my breakfast at 7am and had reduced Insulin.

Good luck next week and I wish you all the best. Take care

Best wishes RRB

Re: Minor operation

Thanks RRB
Yeah local would suit me better but they said they want me in by 7am so assuming it will be first thing and not to eat after 3am
Thanks for your replys really grateful xx
