Been type 1 for 40 yrs. I do struggle with my control, but I keep trying. Last HBA1 was 90 (round about 10). It's been at 8 for long long time.
I missed my diabetic clinic last Friday at the hospital and got a letter today telling me I am now discharged from them and under GP care. This has never happened to me before.
I feel terrible that I missed the app. I have no excuse really. Been very down lately with stuff going on at home. (Long standing probs), my hubby suffers from severe depression, angina and general ill heslth, doesnt work. My daughter (15) has severe depression, on meds, goes to a hospital school and self harms and took 3 overdoses not long ago. My son 22 has adult ADHD and is on various meds. I work 4 days a week and one evening. I try my best to look after myself. I never miss insulin. I test 6 times a day. Ok, my eating patterns are erratic ( do DAPHNE). I have 2 frozen shoulders at various stages, on methotrexate for Rheumatoid arthritis and have asthma. Other than that am fit n healthy!!!!
Sometimes it feels all to much though. I dont want to go to my GP and sound like I'm making excuses. I felt so down and upset really when I saw the letter discharging me. Feels like they gave up on me. Sorry for whinging. Cathy

Sorry to hear about your problems. As a T1 of 47 years I know only too well how things can get on top of you (so many appointments to remember when you have various other health problems). If you see your GP I'm sure he can have you reinstated at the hospital, especially considering that you've been a T1 for so long.

hi, im trying really hard to stay out of t1 areas but I have no choice here, that's disgraceful with all you are going through I want to go to the hospital and bang there heads together, hope things in general improve for you soon, best wishes

Hi, I'm sorry to hear about all the difficulties that you're enduring. Don't feel so bad about missing the appointment. It might not be much comfort, but they might not have discharged you simply because you missed an appointment. Due to the changes in the NHS a lot of Diabetics under hospital care are being discharged back to GPs. At my last hospital appointment, my Consultant mentioned that I might get discharged but that if I needed to see him again that I should contact his Secretary. Might be worth contacting the hospital to explain and just ask if you can have a hospital appointment.

Hi

Cathy, can you get in contact with the hospital dsn either by phone or email and explain the circumstances that led you to missing your appointment. They might be able to get you another app to see the consultant. Other than that, you could write a letter to the consultant or see your GP and ask them to do another referral for you.

I'm also really sorry to read your msg with all the problems you are facing with your family. I've had a guts full myself years ago and don't know how I coped but I did. I think I learned to let it all go over my head and to try not to get too worked up but I also had a lot of support from my OH who was a bit like 'a rock'. Unfortunately, diabetes doesn't give a toss about our problems with life so do try to look after yourself...

Take care

I think it's disgraceful what happened. You can't be discharged only because you missed an appointment. GPs usually have not the right knowledge to follow a T1 diabetic...so please contact your consultant or diabetes nurse. They will fix a new appointment.

These letters are sent out automatically, it's nothing personal.
You can either phone the Hospital and explain why you missed the appointment or get your G.P. to write to them.

When I got home from hospital earlier this year I had a similar one from the Gastro unit. The fact that I had missed it because I was having investigations as an in-patient on the Gastro Unit made no difference, the letter arrived.

Thanks everyone. Think I'll contact my GP and see what he says, he does know what we are going through as a family. I may be fine under GP care?
The hospital are more specialised though. Hopefully I'll get back on a good track and sort myself out. X

as its been said those letters are sent out automatic when an appointment has been missed but your not discharged, the nhs works in strange ways my mum was discharged from the memory clinic because she forgot her appointment they didnt think hey she cant remember. diabetes is very stressful and it sounds like you have a real heavy load going on with working and trying to keep the family going. they arent going to forget about you, the thing is computers dont have hearts just yet.give them a little ring..and dont forget your doctor gets paid a lorry load more than you dont feel like your a burden if you need advice or help make that appointment...good luck sweets.

Hi catsbd. If you've only missed one appointment you wont be discharged its if you've missed 2 appointments then they discharge you back to your gp because of the high demand of patients that could have used your appointment. I dont agree with that but if I set the rules it would be different lol. Good luck with everything x

I would imagine a quick phone call to the diabetes clinic secretary will be enough to get things sorted Cathy, really sorry to read about all the problems in your life.
