More Adult Stem Cell Good News

Hi Carol,

Thanks for posting this. It certainly is an interesting piece of research, although once again it seems to be a case of investigation of the symptom rather than the cause. It is still the autoimmune system killing off the beta cells that is the root cause. Presumably this is why the maximum reprieve that this treatment has managed is 4 years before insulin injections are needed once more. I imagine that is the amount of time it has taken for the immune system to identify and kill off the new beta cells. Now wouldn't it be better if there was some research into stopping the autoimmune system from destroying the beta cells in the first place?

To give an analogy, imagine you have a leaking bathroom tap that keeps flooding the bathroom floor. Do you fix the tap (the cause), or do you put a waterproof sheet on the bathroom floor to reduce the damage (the symptom)?

I live in hope

There is a bit of me however that thinks to stop injecting for a while (knowing that your pancreas will again go ***ts up) and you will again require it would be quite a cruel life. Psychology involved in dx is bad enough for some without a temporary reprieve and then 'getting' it back again

Esp as Dennis says and our immune system for some reason will keep attacking. So no insulin but a life of toxic immunosuppressive drugs and every bug going for the next four years!
