More Cholesterol nonsense

I appear to have no way of getting a breakdown of my cholesterol numbers on the NHS. I am only offered a total cholesterol test at the surgery.

Go test at another clinic.

You could always ask for a full lipid panel next time, and if they try to push statins on you then you must insist on a full panel
I have asked, each time, and been refused. It is not deemed necessary for me to have a full lipid panel. If anyone know how I am to force to medical team to give me the test, I am all ears. I am in Wales, and it appears, despite my explanation to the Diabetic Nurse of how important the type of cholesterol breakdown is, funding is not available to do it unless it is deemed medically necessary by the doctor. And they have deemed that it isnt.

I havent found a private place who will do it either.

thank you very, very much.
However as a word of warning you might want to try and get the blood drawn at your surgery as the home blood kit looked a bit difficult to get enough blood with (depends if you get lots of blood from a finger prick or not). I timed my last insulin test with a blood draw for an HbA1c so the nurse simply filled up the vial from medichecks as well. Depends on how well you get on with your phlebotomist although it is your blood to do with as you will....

Possibly say you suspect one of your ancesters had familial choleterolemia, and you need to make sure you do not suffer this. I suspect you would need a high TC result from the standard cholesterol test to kick start it though, I too had to fight quite hard to get a full breakdown from my GP. It seems that it depends on which lab they use, since some private labs charge the earth for the tests. It was simpler when the path labs were run within the NHS.

Thank you again. I just spoke to medicheck and they said i need about a pen lid full, so i will ask the surgery if, when I have my next HabA1c in June, I can bring the test along. I will ask the lovely phlebotomist, not the receptionist.

Oh my word. That's an impressive check. Too impressive? I'm debating the head-in-sand versus knowing EVERYTHING stance! (Joking, really - it's good to know, I think?) It's a shame there isn't such a comprehensive all-in-one for chaps - you don't have nearly as much in the way of checks, tests and support. So, gentlemen: please get yourself checked for as much as you can, if you have the opportunity to.

What like this one?

Grrrrr!! Thanks, @bulkbiker - I looked at the men's health section and couldn't see a well man check (I've got rubbish eyesight, that's my excuse!). Glad to see there is one - GPs used to have a well man check but they've stopped that apparently. My last sentence stands - I've known men who don't, can't or won't get themselves checked, especially for prostate, with sad results.

britishpub - please tell your good lady that after 9 years or more on statins I took myself off them and have felt vastly improved ever since - same with Metformin which I should never have been on in the first place having Congestive Heart Failure. I am 79 and getting stronger by the day !!

One of my sons suffered PVFS after he had contracted Meningitis. This Post Viral Fatigue was diagnosed by testing faecal matter so there is an NHS test out there. Not too sure if your doc would agree to arranging the test for hyperinsulinaemia though and no idea if the test is available privately.
