And that is pretty well pointless.I appear to have no way of getting a breakdown of my cholesterol numbers on the NHS. I am only offered a total cholesterol test at the surgery.

Interesting to hear the answer to that.Basically, y'all, I tell the docs that I must exercise some to stay healthy but cannot on muscle wasting statins pain .

there is no other clinic - what do you mean?Go test at another clinic.
I have asked, each time, and been refused. It is not deemed necessary for me to have a full lipid panel. If anyone know how I am to force to medical team to give me the test, I am all ears. I am in Wales, and it appears, despite my explanation to the Diabetic Nurse of how important the type of cholesterol breakdown is, funding is not available to do it unless it is deemed medically necessary by the doctor. And they have deemed that it isnt. You could always ask for a full lipid panel next time, and if they try to push statins on you then you must insist on a full panel
https://www.medichecks.com/cholesterol-tests/lipid-profile-fatI havent found a private place who will do it either.
thank you very, very much.
However as a word of warning you might want to try and get the blood drawn at your surgery as the home blood kit looked a bit difficult to get enough blood with (depends if you get lots of blood from a finger prick or not). I timed my last insulin test with a blood draw for an HbA1c so the nurse simply filled up the vial from medichecks as well. Depends on how well you get on with your phlebotomist although it is your blood to do with as you will....thank you very, very much.
Possibly say you suspect one of your ancesters had familial choleterolemia, and you need to make sure you do not suffer this. I suspect you would need a high TC result from the standard cholesterol test to kick start it though, I too had to fight quite hard to get a full breakdown from my GP. It seems that it depends on which lab they use, since some private labs charge the earth for the tests. It was simpler when the path labs were run within the NHS.I have asked, each time, and been refused. It is not deemed necessary for me to have a full lipid panel. Thank you again. I just spoke to medicheck and they said i need about a pen lid full, so i will ask the surgery if, when I have my next HabA1c in June, I can bring the test along. I will ask the lovely phlebotomist, not the receptionist. However as a word of warning you might want to try and get the blood drawn at your surgery as the home blood kit looked a bit difficult to get enough blood with (depends if you get lots of blood from a finger prick or not). Oh my word. That's an impressive check. Too impressive? I'm debating the head-in-sand versus knowing EVERYTHING stance! (Joking, really - it's good to know, I think?) It's a shame there isn't such a comprehensive all-in-one for chaps - you don't have nearly as much in the way of checks, tests and support. So, gentlemen: please get yourself checked for as much as you can, if you have the opportunity to.I wish I lived in a place where I could just buy a buncha tests out of pocket. Where I live the results have to go to a doctor and that doctor has to then decide to release the results to you.
I liked this one because it covers a lot of the tests you need for Diabetes co-morbidities

I even like the name of the test.

Grrrrr!! Thanks, @bulkbiker - I looked at the men's health section and couldn't see a well man check (I've got rubbish eyesight, that's my excuse!). Glad to see there is one - GPs used to have a well man check but they've stopped that apparently. My last sentence stands - I've known men who don't, can't or won't get themselves checked, especially for prostate, with sad results. What like this one?

So they have stopped dividing HDL into total Cholesterol?
Perhaps they are desparate to get their quota of statin users up?
britishpub - please tell your good lady that after 9 years or more on statins I took myself off them and have felt vastly improved ever since - same with Metformin which I should never have been on in the first place having Congestive Heart Failure. I am 79 and getting stronger by the day !!Not strictly about Diabetes so forgive me......
My wife, who is 55 5ft 2 tall and barely 6st 10 (94 lbs) and with a blood pressure reading that is so low it’s barely measurable, had a Blood Test recently and was asked to make an appointment “as a matter of urgency”
Anyway her total Cholesterol came back as 6.8so of course going on Statins is the only way to head off impending doom.
Her refusal was met with disbelief and a threat that she would have to go through all this “stress” every year until she did as she was told !!!
Her breakdown is interesting and probably quite unusual, and certainly not understood or even looked at by the Doctor.
Total Cholesterol 6.8
Serum non HDL Cholesterol 3.1
Serum triglycerides 1.0
Serum LDL Cholesterol 2.65
Serum HDL Cholesterol 3.70
Serum Cholesterol/HDL 1.8
Doctors are idiots !!!
I am late to this thread but wondered if anyone knew of a reliable test for gut biome diversity and/or hperisnulinaemia. My son is 12 and has lots abdominal fat and is tired all the time. Maybe I know too much but I am worried he is insulin resistant but my GP refuses to do anyting until he is past puberty. What like this one?
