Sixteen months since diagnosis, with consistent good control and all HbA1c results less than 46 mmol/mol. So why, I wonder, have I just been diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy affecting my toes. It’s a mystery to my consultant and DNS and it’s getting more severe with each passing week. My internet searching suggested that the treatment options are limited both in number and efficacy. Any top tips?

Regards

John

metformin can prevent the uptake of b12 vitamin and a deficiency of vitamin b12 can also lead to neuropathy

some use Alpha Lipoic Acid the R-alpha-lipoic-acid type to help their neuropathy... some says it heelps

like at least 600-800 mg a day

Controlling spikes after meals is important too. I've read about a number of people with good control who still developed a small amount of neuropathy simply due to moderate spikes.

For that reason, I personally aim to stay below 7.8 after meals, preferably below 7. That's just my personal choice, but it might be something you want to look into.

It says a great deal for this site and it's contributors that I rapidly received two sensible, practical and potentially very useful top tips. This new development is massively significant for me, but unfortunately no one in my Team of healthcare professionals has suggested anything. Don't you just love diabetes - the disease that keeps on giving.

Now here's a rare thing - some positive type 1 news. I read Azure's advice (which questioned whether post-prandial BG spikes were the cause of my peripheral neuropathy) with interest. Following this I mooched around the interweb and came across a claim that probably applies to me, which was that “really tight BG control can reverse the neuropathy if the onset of both the neuropathy and diabetes are recent”. So, I redoubled my efforts to tighten control, purchased armfuls of low glycaemic index foods (principally granola and brown rice) and appropriately modified my diet. I’m only a few days into regime change, but already the neuropathy is much improved, which is bloody wonderful.

I find Magnesium supplement some time before bed helps both sleep and the circulation in my legs and feet.

A week into my new cardboard diet and it's improvement all the way. Life is good and Spring is judt around the corner.

Great news @John_H that is a lovely update and wonderful to hear positive news
