eating low carb to keep the numbers down and 3x500 metformin and taking 16 units of insulin at night...
what number should i aim for in the mornings?
does it even matter? i think the insulin makes a difference,
but the time i measure it, say 6am or 8am makes a huge difference!
And in the jenny ruhl 5% program, is there a number before i eat that i should aim for?
after all bigger numbers before any meal will mean bigger numbers after the meal!
thanks all

You mention insulin, but if you are reading Jenny Ruhl I imagine you are T2?

"Fasting" in this context is usually taken to mean directly after getting out of bed, as one's bg, as you have found, can rise or fall as one becomes more active, even if one has eaten nothing. I find my fasting bg tends to set the pattern for the later readings. It is usually considered less important than the bg after meals. JR says that the fasting bg is often the last to deteriorate, so that having a high fasting bg may indicate even higher post-prandial bgs.

In different books or on her website JR gives various slightly differing target ranges. The formulation I follow goes like this (there are 3 levels):

.......FASTING.............PRE-PRANDIAL........POST PRANDIAL 1 HOUR..............POST P. 2 HOURS

NORMAL:...............< 5.05 / 4.7....................< 4.9....................................< 6.66...........................< 5.55 / 4.7

HIGH NORMAL......< 5.5........................... < 5.55.................................. < 8.88..........................< 5.55

HEART SAFE...........< 5.5...........................< 6.66.................................. < 7.77...........................<6.66

A1c 5% = 31.1 = average mmol/L < 5.4

However JR also suggests a target of "never over 6.66" and I try to keep to that. The 4.7s are actually Dr Bernstein's target, JR is more forgiving!

PS I laid out this little table nicely spaced, but the website will have none of it, and has squashed everything together, so I don't know whether you can understand which numbers belong where?

PPS Fixed it!

PPPS! Oh dear, it's still not right. The first column should be numbers under "FASTIN" but I can't get it to show that.
