Hi All

would like to hear your views on below. this is for my wife.

FBS : 5.5mmol/L at 8 AM
after blood test et al, had sweet bun with raisin and it was sugar coated. at 11 AM
Took Blood Test at 11:34 AM . It was 9.2mmol/L.

We rarely take test after food. Today i took because, she said was tired. and it was 9.2. bit of panic and first time seeing such high reading. What must be target for BS after meal? When BS shoots up (say range to 9.2), does it cause tiredness? Want to rule out if tiredness is due to high blood sugar.

thanks
Kumar

Hi. The standard pattern is to test just before eating and then two hours afterwards. That should show how well the body deals with the food. The idea is to avoid both a rise of 2mmol/l or more and a rise above 7.8mmol/l. A sugar coated sweet bun with raisins would probably give me that sort of unacceptable rise - I stopped eating anything like that two years ago and have never tested for it as I am pretty sure what I'd find.

I have noticed that a relatively small change in BG levels can sometimes result in me feeling tired and sleepy. This is just my experience - it doesn't mean that what's happening with your wife is the same thing.

Hi, I have to ask what you expected? Maybe read some stuff about what diabetes is?

It doesn't look unusual, I have found that carb laden foods and the blood sugar rise that they cause often causes me to get tired. I used to crash about mid afternoon after having lunch due to the heavier lunches, anything with potatoes and similar. In hindsight very high carbs and likely very high rises

I use https://www.diabetes.co.uk/diabetes_care/blood-sugar-level-ranges.html as aims for my targets and try to go to non diabetic where I can

Hi there, a rise to 9.2 a half hour after eating a sugary bun is not unusual even for a non diabetic.

As a type 1 if i'de eaten that I wouldn't be surprised if my blood sugar ended up at about 15 mmol/L , I think your wife needs to find a healthier option to the sugar coated bun , As kk123 said a rise to 9.2 after eating that would not even be unusual for a non diabetic .

Don't eat sweet bun with raisin that is sugar coated.
