Hi all

Wanted to sound you out on something.

I have generally got my morning routine down pretty well. I eat a (fairly high carb) breakfast take a unit of insulin per every 10gs and then have a lovely 25 minute walk to the train station. Once I'm off the train I have another 15 minute walk to work - roughly 40 minutes exercise in all. After two hours my BG is at a healthy 5 or 6 mmoles/L.

Occasionally I'm in a rush so have to catch the tram to the train station so I can't do the 25 minutes walk but I simply up the insulin a bit - 1.2 units for every 10gs and again, all seems to be well

However today (Saturday) I had the same breakfast but haven't left the house (decided to have a lazy day - I'm worth it ;-)). So I upped by my insulin to 1.5 units. After checking my BG levels two hours after eating they were over 14 mmoles/L!!!! (Don't worry - I've checked for ketones and they are only at 0.1).

Anyway, I'm not that surprised they were higher than usual - but 14? I was just wondering if anyone else found that exercise made quite so much difference. Also, my insulin sensitivity for lunch and dinner never means I have to take more than 1 unit per 10gs. Is anyone else so much more sensitive in the mornings?

Thanks guys!

Gareth

I find exercise can be quite a roller coaster for me especially when I was on pens. Have you looked at I think it's called run sweet website?

Hi Gareth - welcome to the forum. I am insulin resistant in the morning till 1pm so take 1.5 units to 10g of carb, so in answer to your question it will be different for everyone and exercise does play a vital role in sensitivity too. It is trial and error but if you record your results it will help you monitor this.

I am very insulin resistant in the morning and less so as the day goes on. Even just a moderate walk will raise me in the morning but generally lowers me after lunch or dinner.

exercise for me, bg 8 before and 5 after. it will climb up a bit as time passes by.

nice day but not that warm.

I'm still in the honeymoon phase and on a day of heavy exercise I may need as little as 4 units of basal.

If I take a day off from the gym/running that number jumps to about 10-12 total units/day

I cracked a rib and had to take a week off from the gym and that number jumped to 14-16.

If I get off the low-carb diet and don't workout I could need as much as 30 units/day.

So yea, exercise definitely has a significant effect on how much insulin I need.

Significant for me too (also honeymooning). On weekdays, I take 2.5 units for porridge with blueberries and a soya latte ... except on my work from home day (i.e. without the walk to the tube/walk to work) where it increases to 3.5 units.
