Morning spike after breakfast

Hi guys,

After some advice for the past couple of months I've been getting a massive spike a couple hours after eating breakfast my blood sugar goes up to anything over 25mmol. But plummets back down a couple hours after that.

Never had any problems before, I'm
Injecting the same amount of insulin. I'm on a split of levemir and novo rapid.

I've tried injecting more novorapid but I just have a low about 3-4 hours after. It's really annoying because it can happen on a daily occurrence.

Any pointers anyone ?
 
Have you tried injecting 15-30 mins before to see if this reduces the postprandial spike?
 
Well I inject as soon as I wake up but doesn't make any difference to be honest. Then eat around 30-45 mins later

Right, 25mol/l is a really big spike and if your bg levels return to normal a few hours later you might have some lipo issues (poor and erratic insulin absorption), out of interest what do you eat for breakfast and is it just after your breakfast where you see these sort of spikes?
 
Have wheetabix normally 3 or some of the mini chocolate ones but a smaller portion. Yes it goes right up after an hour,makes me feel like **** for the first few hours of the morning too. Only ever happens with breakfast after that I control it we'll always under 9mmol.

we are all different but i wouldn't be able to eat as high a carb brekkie as that without a huge spike.

have you tried a low carb option more like the continental option -- eggs , meat , cheese.
could be worth a try as an alternative .

Change your breakfast and see what results you get, I eat traditional porridge oats (rough cut) most mornings and add seeds, blueberries and some natural greek yogurt (50g of carbs in total), the fats in the seeds and yogurt helps reduce the postprandial spikes and also bulks up the breakfast which keeps me full till lunch, very rarely do I see a bg spike outside my bg tartget range but I still inject 15-20 mins before.

Weetabix, especially the small chocolate variety are highly processed grains and probably is the cause of your post-breakfast spike, try changing to an alternative and see how you get on.
 
I understand where your coming from but I have always eaten like that In the morning. But I see your point for sure.

I Get This Excact Thing like clock work. regardless of how much breakfast i eat. i also have the split.

there are 2 things at play that cause it for me,

1.The Dawn Phenomenon ive noticed that even if i dont eat my blood sugars will spike massively in the morning then have a huge quick drop 2/3 hours after my inuslin dosage.

The liver is dumping sugar into your blood in the mornings, ive been told theres nothing that can be done about this. i tend to peak around 18 2 hours after i eat then drop to under 10 within 30-40 mins later its the only time my body seems to have this rapid drop so long after taking insulin.


2. Milk, ive discovered even when i use small amounts of milk in my breakfast the effect is much greater, ive come to the conclusion milk really badly spikes my blood sugar levels.
 
I eat sardines/mackerel and celery sticks for breakfast everyday, boring but no spikes (extremely low carb). No amount of insulin would prevent me from spiking eating weetabix for breakfast.
