Morning Syndrome

I've always had Morning Syndrome/dawn Phenomenon . My Fasting bloods are currently around 4.5 to 5.5, but 30 minutes later I can be 2 or 3 points higher as my liver dumps glucose.

Is there anything I can do? Or do I just have to wait for my BG to stabilise in the morning before having breakfast and taking enough insulin to cover both the carbs and the Glucose from my Liver?

I find this happens too, if I don't eat upon waking my bg levels go up within an hour or so, what I do is bolus and eat soon after waking to pre-empt the liver dump, try and see how you get on.

I have this too. What I do is take 1.5-2 units when I wake up, if I'm also having breakfast I'll add those units on too and eat 15 minutes later. If not eating straight away just take the 1.5-2units on its own!

I also find that if I take the insulin and continue lying in bed for 10-15 minutes this really helps stop the spike. But not really practical on work days!

I take 2-3 units of bolus as soon as I open my eyes... The minute I lift my head my levels rise!! Much easier to control for lie ons etc now I'm back on mdi compared to pump as it is literally rises from opening eyes. Doesn't matter if I get up at 4am or 10am...

Did you have to do this everyday? I can wake up in the 6s and be in the 9s if I don't eat anything within an hour. Sometimes I don't fancy food straight away so is there another way to stop this from happening? Would increasing my lantus help or not? Thanks

Most of us take a small dose of rapid acting insulin to counter the Dawn Phenomenon when we get up. You need to monitor the timing of your rise and dose appropriately.

Yes it was everyday, now on a pump I can use a TBR if I know I'm sleeping late.

The trouble is if you up your lantus dose it may lead to hypo's elsewhere in the day, the only other way is to give a small correction dose of QA to counteract the bg rise when you don't eat.
