Pump
my pump failed last night with a motor error. This is the second time as it also happened 3 weeks ago while I was on holiday in the mediterranean. Luckily it sorted itself out that time (as I had no spare pump)but this time it seems to have been terminal :(
I spent 30 minutes on the phone with a very nice man in America who ran through all kinds of tests with the pump but alas was not able to sort it out...

I am waiting for delivery of a new pump tomorrow. For today have been using Insulatard and novorapid with a syringe, which was difficult as increments on a syringe are not small enough!!
However control has not been too bad surprisingly as I have spent ther day at a theme park with 5 grandchildren. Lots of exercise I suppose!!!
I have only had this pump for about 9 months after my last one developed a crack in the casing.
I must say I have been very impressed with the service from Medtronic. Both on the phone last night ,then phoning me at 8.40 this morning to confirm delivery of new pump tomorrow.

Glad to hear that you've got it sorted..

I'm so glad that when I had problems with my Roche spirit pump I could still sort of use it, I had one of the batch with the failing button, so when it went on my I was able to flip the screen so I could bolus upwards but not decrease the bolus but it did limp me until the next day when my replacement pump was delivered..

New pump delivered at 0800 today :) and I was able to put in all the rates and settings using a printout that I did a few weeks ago.
I would remind people to do this as it would have been difficult to set up new pump without it.

OMG thats awful!!

When choosing my pump I was very concerned about reliability. My clinic has over 100 patients on pumps and I spoke off record to the nurses about it. They said some companies were too quick to improve pumps without fully testing them or to cut corners to add better features, such as remote controls. I asked which pump they felt was best made and most reliable and they both answered without a doubt Animas. This was music to my ears as that's the pump I wanted already!! The Animas is also the pump they strongly recommend for children and anyone heavy handed due to it being tougher.

Glad you got your issue sorted and hope you don't have any more!! :)

This did tickle me a bit..

I assume this is the nurses personal opinion completely..

The Animas 2020 was a nightmare when it was first released a lot of moans and replacements, Same with the Veo and Know doubt with the Aminas Vibe when it's fully available.. And the Combo had issues with the remote alone and not the pump..

Has yet I've not heard any professional, Aminas pumper user or parent advising others to get the Animas purely on the bases it's tougher than other pumps.. Let alone strongly advising it pumps are pumps and all pumps have the same duriablity to the next manufacturer it's one of the things within their licencing/approval conditions to enable them to be sold as medical equipement..

Both my Spirit and now my Combo have a rather a battering from myself, from being dropped, banged against hard surfaces when I've knocked the pump against walls in kennels. or slipping off the clip or falling out of my pocket and swinging into an hard surface.. The pump has also landed into a couple of buckets of water, a couple of dogs (one of mine included) have held the pump in their jaws, when it's swung at the end of the tubing for verious reasons... It hasn't caused any of my pumps to fail..

My first spirit was replaced to a know manufacturering issue that effect one batch, causing on of the side rocker buttons to fail.. My second Spirit I had worn the rubber cover over the rocker buttons which could comprimised the waterproofing of that area.. So replaced with the Combo pump.. At no point was I unable to use any of the pumps Just send the old one back when I recieved the new one..

And people do tend to get biased about the pump they use, I actually do like the Animas 2020, my pump is due for replacement next year.. But the Animas isn't quite compatiable with my basals needs, due to the limits on how many times not sure whether this would pan out...you can change your dose setting in 24 hours, 8 times isn't enough I would have to comprise with some large steps in changes so not sure if I could get it to pan out right..

I have been perfectly happy with my medtronic but have had to have it replaced twice now in the past year.
But both times a new one arrived within a day and a half so that can't be bad!!
And as has been said they do get a bit of a bashing. I think the first one cracked because I always wore it with the spring clip on my belt. But what has happened with this one I have no idea.
So my warranty will run out next year and as I understand it that warranty has been transferred to my new pump. But when warranty runs out this new pump will only be a year old, so will they replace it do you think or extend the warranty?

I'm not sure on that one cally..

I'm in a similar situation

In the past pumps have been replace once the 4 year warranty was up, but rumbulings amongst some clinics last year where some pumpers who were due to have their pump replaced due to the warranty runing out where told they would only get a new pump as their pump failed..

The only expception to this was the old blue Roche Spirit pump, but this was because it had a preset date of 1460 days (4 years) and the pump then stops working, and can only be reset by Roche themselves..

They've partly taken this featue off the Combo pump, a new pump doesn't have the period clock set, but if you have a Combo replacement pump then they set the period clock on it.. As this is what they with my pump so it run's out at the end of the warranty period for my old pump..

Must remember to ask my consultant in January when I see what happens, as I don't mind keeping the pump for longer, but it will have to be sent back to Roche for resetting... And I'm not going without a pump for a week or so for this to be done..
