My D Dr is moving me over to Insulin next Friday and I have a Double appt with the D Nurse.
She will show me what to do and when.
Ive got to do at least four BG readings
Fasting, pre Breakfast, Pre Evening meal and Bedtime, so she can calculate what dose to start me on.
In the meantime what can I expect to happen?
Bit scared tbh :?

Hi Linda,

I am bumping your post up in the hope that someone will answer.

Do not use insulin myself but have heard from several people that they seem to get much better control with insulin. It is not something to be feared as some would have us believe. Think positive.

You will be suprised at how well you soon adapt to insulin.Do you know if its just a basal insulin for a start or maybe a mixed one thats both long and short acting. The nurse will monitor you closely for a day or two while you get used to it and am always saying that new to insulin folk should have a buddy (pm me if it helps) just to help out with any questions that might come up in the beginning especially at weekends and evenings when the medics are not around to advise, would have thought friday was not a good day to begin for that reason.

Hello Borderter
I have no idea what type of Insulin it is :(
All the Dr said was to take the 4 readings (at least a day) so Nurse can work it out :?
Ive been doing this since I saw him last Friday.
Scary thing for me is if I take too much
Do I have to add up my food intake as in carbs, proteins and fats ect?
Is this a life long thing?
I would Love you to be my Buddy  Thank you
Hmm good point about Friday

I have no idea what insulin you will be started off on as it could be just a basal insulin on its own, a pre mixed insulin that would need to be injected twice per day or the bolus/basal regime which you have read about on the forum. Everyone is different so your dsn will be able to look at your bg readings throughout the day and decide from those which insulin you will be suited to. Can I also suggest that you test your bg during the night as well about 2am and again at 5am as that will also help the dsn to decide.

Insulin pens are very easy to use and come with fairly tiny pen needles these days so you will soon get used to using them.

All the best for Friday (although I think Monday might be a better day as at least there will be someone about to answer any phone calls you might make). There will always be someone on the forum that will help you though, so dont worry.............

It sounds like its going to be mixed but could be wrong about that,I think that as dn has not asked you what sort of food you had to go with those bg readings
Make sure you have loads of strips as you will be testing testing testing to see how the insulin suits your food pattern and your lifestyle also how active you are generally
Am pm ing you with my details :D

Hi iHs
Thank you for your advice
I will test through the night at the times you said (which will be easy as I don't sleep well)
I feel re-assured knowing I can get great advice from you all

Good luck Linda and don't be afraid of going onto insulin, with the right help and careful self-management hypo's and hyper's can become controllable.

Hi Linda

Another thought which will be a very very good idea is for you to write down all the food that you are eating throughout the day. Most food does contain carbohydrate so before you eat it, have a look for the carb content. It's usually written somewhere on the sides of most food that comes in a packet. Just note the carb and dont worry about the sugar. If you eat a sandwich at lunchtime, the average slice of bread is about 17g carb so a sarny will be 34g carb plus there might be some salad cream, pickle etc that also contain a small amount of carb so add that as well.

If you do all the above, along with recording your bg levels at the time that you eat, the info that the dsn will get from this will enable her/him to work out a better starting dose of insulin whatever insulin regime you get started off on.

Even with twice daily insulins, people still need to count the carb to make sure that they are not eating more than the insulin will be able to handle in sorting out bg levels. People need to eat regularly and be guided by their bg readings on their meters.

You will get used to it though....... we all do :)

Good luck Serendipity!

Going onto insulin was the best thing I ever did. I was upset and terrified at the thought, but it was easy peasy in reality - or very nearly easy peasy
