Im taking a year out of my british life to go visit family in new zealand for a year, ive been trying to look on the internet for some answers but no luck as of yet!

1. Will NHS cover me at all if im only moving abroad for 1 year on a visa?
2. I use novorapid and lantus insulin, how much does this roughly cost in new zealand if i need to buy it? As well as the novofine needles?
3. Has anyone took a year out in new zealand who is also type 1 diabetic and is it worth it?!

Thanks, any help will be appreciated :)

NHS doesn't have to provide you with medication for any trips longer than 3 months, and it will most likely be excluded from your travel health insurance. I'd guess that a Novorapid pen will cost about £10

A post answered by sugarless sue back in April this year lists lots of insulin costs.

But you would need to check how much the cost would be in NZ, I imagine a letter to the NZ embassy may give the answers you need :D

Your best bet would be to contact Medicare or the NZ equivalent. They will be able to tell you all about cost etc. and if you are entitled to the same benefits as residents of NZ. I am in Australia and also have a NDSS card (National Diabetes Subsidy Scheme) so I get free needles and reduced costs for test strips. Khaleb has a Health Care Card so I pay $5.40 for every script (insulin/hypo kits) and his test strips cost me $1.50 per box but maybe up to $15 for other people. I pay full price for lancets which you can just buy over the counter. Aust and NZ may not stock test strips for your meter so keep that in mind also. The cheapest meters are about $30 if you have to get another one. We have Mobile's/Optimum Exceed/Performers/Lite's off the top of my head I think the Aviva meters are just coming.

I'm sure as a British Citizen you can get a medicare card and from there see a GP and get an NDSS card and scripts for what can't be bought over the counter.

Here's a government site that can help...
