Hello. I went for a hearing test as I was struggling to hear clearly through my right ear. The neurologist said I had nerve damage in the inner ear and referred me to ENT. Went for my appointment yesterday and have now been referred for an MRI scan. Just wondered if this could be related to my diabetes and if anyone has had a similar MRI scan? I would be interested to hear your thoughts and experiences if you feel you could share them. Thanks.
Hello,@dogslife, Did the ENT inform you of why the MRI scan was ordered?
It is incumbent on doctors to explain why they are ordering a test as you are the one expected to undergo it
and also expect to be told whether there are any possible downsides, side-effects etc.
Hi gemma_T1. Thanks for the wishes and glad my post has helped motivate you to go to the GP. Fortunately I don't have pain just a high pitched whine and occasional discomfort. I have for some time been struggling to hear voices clearly when there is background noise , having to put the telephone on loud-speech and turning the volume up on the TV. Assuming it was an"Age" thing I finally gave in and went to my GP's practice nurse who referred me to "Specsavers"Hi!
Please let us know how you get on.
I have neuropathy and problema hearing , beginning in one ear and now affecting both... I’ve been thinking of getting it looked at for a few years as it’s getting worse. Do you have pain too? I suffer from pain in the ears and it’s quite like neuropathic pain. You have spurred me on to contact my GP.
Good luck with your test!
Best wishes!
hi @dogslife
strangely i find my hearing to now be MORE sensitive, after many months years of believing i might suffering from hearing loss
As for the MRI scan.
I had to have one, and if you've never had one before like i did.
i'd prep just a little
I don't (or didn't ) suffer from claustrophobia
yet being in the scanner was awful.
i think the fact i felt bolted to the board, they slide you in on didn't help.
(the weirdest thoughts went through my head..what if theres a fire and they all leave me here..
we ARE our own worst enemy sometimes...)
the music gets drowned out by the vibration/hum of the machine as it does it's thing.
I had to really concentrate and close my eyes.
for me... i just imagined i was in my happy place.as in on my bike, the confines
of the scanner were the helmet surrounds on my my head, front visor etc.
that helped me.
it was all safe and eventually over with..so no harm done.
and i'm Sure others were much tougher and braver then me..
but next time i'm taking a cab to the appointment and stopping at a pub on way for several pints and shorts first.
hopefully i'll kip through the entire thing.
.
Hi jjraak. Thanks for your helpful and good humored response. Now you mention it I am very sensitive to loud noises too. I had an MRI scan last year but on my lower spine so didn't have the frame over my face. I didn't hear any music and assumed they had forgotten to put any on but maybe the combination of my hearing loss and the noise of the machines prevented it reaching me. You sound like you handled it very well. I hope the results were good and worth the stress of the scan.hi @dogslife
