Hi, I am 39 I was diagnosed 4 years with Type 1 after feeling ill and having ketones etc... Have always felt ILL but never gone to the doctors since I was a kid, (lesson learnt) any way I have a new pump well it's 17 months now since I have had this and it has changed my life I enjoy a drink and kebab etc... Manage well on the down side I have put a bit of weight on but working on this. Anyway I am not sure if this is related but over the last 8 months I have been having muscle ache in my legs and getting very painful nerve ache in my shoulders and elbows / neck and back. Sometimes it feels as if my legs are racing and feel very restless I put this down to the bed, but after trying several other beds it still happened. It seems to happen more when I relax and sleep sometimes waking me up. I walk a lot with the dog normally 2 - 5 miles a day at the weekend and 1/2 mile in the week evenings but have always done this so can't blame that. Is there a connection to type 1, the pump or is this age?? Thanks for reading this long post :)

Your not on a statin are you?

Hi @steree statins (used to lower LDL cholesterol levels) can cause lasting muscle pain as a side effect in some individuals.

I believe restless leg syndrome (usually obvious at night) can be made worse by high blood sugar. Similarly, chronic high blood sugars are associated with increased inflammation and this may be the reason why diabetics are prone to frozen shoulder whereby the connective tissue becomes thickened limiting movement and causing considerable pain. Do you have any numbness or tingling in hands or feet? This can a sign of peripheral neuropathy - a very common complication in diabetes.

If your blood sugars levels and HbAc1 are still a bit high, then tightening your control some more may relieve some of your symptoms. But these symptoms may also be due to other non diabetes-related issues - good idea to ask your GP to make a referral to a spine/neuro specialist to rule out slipped discs, hernias, etc.

Hi No why do you ask

As the oldgraymare says, some people experience side-effects when taking statins and they include the ones that you have mentioned above.

Diabetic Neuropathy can present similar symptoms but that's not to say that this is the cause, only your gp or consultant can diagnose what the problem is so best get a check-up if you've not done so already.

Go to your GP, ask for a blood test to check for rheumatoid arthritis, certain meds can cause this, then again it might not be related to anything but be a new thing for you

Have your blood sugars gone high lately? the first sign for me that my sugars are high is that my legs ache and cramp up

You sound like I was.

Adding fat in to my diet has stopped the pains ( mine I believe was statin damage). The only fat I got was semiskimmed milk and a bit of butter as I never ate much meat and never cheese.

Nowadays I have double cream in my coffee once a day, double cream or full fat greek yogurt with flaxeed and chia seeds on my berries with 100g of brie cheese every night. I now eat salmon and gorgeous fishcakes. Pointy red peppers also have philly cheese in. Rest of my food is mainly veg or salad with only occasional meats.oh and cheese omlettes and everything in coconut oil. Any homebaked goodies are with ground almonds, coconut flour and coconut milk.

This has totally restored my muscle damage.
