Muscle fatigue

Hi

I took a 1hr spinning class for the first time the other day which was hard work but burnt a lot of calories. I took the class with friends and I'm the only one that is type2 diabetic. 2 days later I've had to call in sick at work because my thighs hurt so much I couldn't raise my legs, they are getting better now 4 days on. I am an active person, I go walking play badminton and other various sporting activities. My friends did not come down with the same condition as my self. Someone said that the seating position is critical doing these exercises and others have said I'm not used to biking at that sort of levels. My question is really, would my diabetes be responsible for my muscles and is this why my friends were not affected like I was.

Thanks

Are you taking Statins alongside your DB meds - as this can cause muscle pain, the DB shouldn't cause muscle pain, or maybe you just overdid it

I would say it's just because you not used to the exercises involved in the spinning class, I know if I've not been on my bike for a while then go for a long bike ride my thighs can hurt, yet I walk miles every week.

Thx for the comments guys, I don't take anything else besides my normal DB meds, your right I'm not used to that kind of intense exercise but nobody else was. I think I've either over done it or my setup was correct and it's put to much pressure on my thighs. My wife heard from someone about muscles and DB and that it can affect your legs, I don't know true/false, I didn't want to put it down to DB cause I liked the exercise.

Again thx for comments

Self absorbed and rude people! Motorists who are oblivious to the rest of the world, and really don't give a ****!
It can affect muscles almost any part of body. I can't go into specifics but recommend you research affects on this site or diabetes.org

I'm not an expert, but do you use the standard gym bikes? I've had some serious leg muscle ache after increasing the resistance too much. Statins didn't help but I see you're not taking them. I blame them for most things.
If your metabolism isn't burning fuel properly to get the energy to the muscle, that can be an issue. I didn't do biochemistry and the Krebs Cycle is over my head, but if the metabolism is wonky . . . . . . .
If you were feeling it 4 days later, that's a lot.

Hey, they weren't the normal gym bike they were a proper spinning bikes (I'm no bike expert) mate tells me if my seat wasn't set correctly it could have put all the pressure on my thighs, my calfs were fine. I'm glad it wasn't the DB that was the cause I'm now thinking.

There may well be a correlation with your muscle fatigue and your diabetes, there's a condition called Peripheral Arterial Disease that can result in leg fatigue and pains, but only a Dr could diagnose that.

Given you say that your usually quite sporty and don't have this muscle fatigue my guess is it's just the new exercise, however if in doubt get checked out Andy.

I'd say you've overdone it a bit on something you're not used to and didn't get the bike set up properly. Get someone to work through both seat height and fore/aft settings with you next time

I experienced exactly the same earlier this year when I had to run in an unfamilar pair of shoes which altered my gait and muscle usage subtly. My quads suffered horrendously vs the same race previously.

My friend, I believe you could have stepped into the wonderful world of DOMS. Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness. Or "muscle fever" if that yanks your chain! It can strike at any time after exercise but it's most favourite habitat is in the muscles that have not seen the light of day for some time or have been pushed too far. I run a lot. My thighs are my best feature according to Wifey and solid as a rock. So why am I crippled after a days gardening? Crouching down is using different muscles that don't get used a lot and they get no build up, just straight into a 4hr crouching session. Typically the pain hits 2 days after. Kettlebells, no worries - crippled for a week!

Shame for taking time off work - keep moving regardless of the pain, it's the best cure. Go hard or go home! If your not bumping down the stairs on your butt you've not given your all!! (just joking).

Oh, a quick disclaimer in light of another thread I have posted on, I am not a medical professional and there is the possibility that it may have something to do with your diabetes but I would personal prescribe more spinning sessions until it stops hurting for so long. Me, I have never gone spinning on account of how many people I have spoken to who have suffered severe cases of DOMS. :)

I agree with scardoc, it sounds like DOMS. DOMS affects some folks more than others. The best way to fend it off is to stay well hydrated, do a proper cool down at the end of the exercise and a good stretching session afterwards. Also make sure you replace electrolytes too if you have been sweating profusely.
Better luck next time eh!
