My 1 year old son - Hypoglycemia

Hi all,

My 1 year old son was taken to hospital at the end of April as he was un-responsive and quite floppy (with no energy), the paramedic checked his glucose levels and he was down to 2.1, he was given glucagon and tested overnight where his sugars were stable and we were discharged and told it was probable a one off.
Not happy with this I went to the doctors who gave us a Glucose testing kit, he's had 6 hypo's during May - we watch for symptoms and then check him - mother's instinct kicks in & I'm right!
Now we have been referred to a pediatrician next week to discuss what's happening. I have done a lot of reading about hypo / hyper / diabetes etc as I like to have knowledge before they baffle me with science!
My question is, is hypoglycemia related to diabetes (I was led to believe it was hyper that was diabetes).
Has anyone had the same experience and/or know what to expect when we see the pediatrician next week?

Thank you for the links & info I found that very helpful do you know what to expect when we see the pediatrician next week at all? Will Finlay be sent for further test?

Hi and welcome!

I would, at this stage, allow yourself to be totally guided by the experts.

There are a few of us on here who have Reactive Hypoglycaemia, which we control mainly by diet, but RH in children is a different thing. When it occurs in children it is often a stage they grow out of, or it needs different treatment, but it is not an area I know much about.

I do remember @phoenix once posted an excellent link about childhood RH, but I am afraid I didn't keep it. Hopefully she will see my tag and post it again.

There is a Reactive Hypoglycaemia section of the forum where we have a number of threads that you may find interesting, but I do want to stress that childhood RH is not the same as adult RH, and you are best guided by medical professionals.

I totally agree with the above post.
One of my grandkids had low blood glucose levels until about 3 months old.
Her hormones hadn't kicked in as normal.
I suspect that this will be similar.
They check blood glucose regularly now in maternity and pre and post natal care.
I have not much knowledge on paediatric hypoglycaemia, though I know how to treat them as they happen. It all depends on age tho.

Oh yes, but nothing invasive it will be probably a normal blood screening which I have no doubt the little un has had before.

Hi @Finlay15515

I absolutely second the advice to see what the paediatrician says. Hopefully, they will be able to find a cause, and give you advice about what to do.

You may get more answers posting on a general baby/toddler site, but it would be good if you were able to update us here too.

It sounds like a scary experience and I send you and your son my best wishes.

Thank you for your reply! Not too long to wait now for his appointment & we can get the ball rolling & find out what's going on & manage him better! I'll reply to the thred to keep everyone updated. It's lovely having you all on here for support as I don't know anyone that's been / going through the same x

Thank you to everyone for your honest opinions & advice, it really is much appreciated as the support from you all is massive! I'll update Wednesday after his appointment Fingers crossed for a hypo free weekend for the little man x

UPDATE:
Hi all,
Finlay saw the pediatrician last week who has referred him to the children's hospital.
He'll be having a hormone test, a fasting test and an EGG to check brain activity for seizures etc...Excellent result as they are being very thorough. They want to check the blood sugars are not a red-herring covering something under-lying.
Hoping his appointments come through soon as he woke up and was on his way for another low this morning. Only 3.5 but still a concern :-(
He turns 13 months on Wednesday x

Really pleased for the little I'm. Hope they can find the cause!

Hi I hope you get a referral soon. Can I ask are you treating him for a low blood sugar/giving some sort of fast acting treatment or food?x

Paediatric Hypoglycaemia is different and usually advise to feed normally and not over sugar the hypoglycaemia. Feeding a toddler is still usually every two to three hours and that should be sufficient to overcome hypos.
Usually, also, there is an underlying medical problem that causes the low blood glucose levels.
And most toddlers grow out of the condition before school age.

Of course, if a child has an emergency, I would expect the paramedics to use whatever they think is best to avert serious harm.

Sounds like he is getting excellent care. Am very pleased for you!

Hi & thank you! Hopefully the postie will deliver a letter soon We just give him juice and food for now as we don't know what we're dealing with really. We've managed to avoid any fast acting treatment as we're catching his hypo's in good time so he's not dangerously low. Very wary about Glucagon, would rather leave that to the paramedics etc if needed x

Thanks Nosher8355, we take great care in what we give him and was given some good advise last time we were in hospital, told to give him juice (full sugar) like Vimto etc....none of the 'no added sugar' stuff just to get him up quick and without medical intervention. Finlay as a healthy apptitite 3 good meals a day +snacks...and supper! lol
We know that when we catch him on a hypo he's not low enough to be classed as 'low' but as a mum I only have to look at him to know he's heading down that direction.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge
