My 5 year old has lots of peaks

Hi I’m after some advice please, my daughter was diagnosed Dec 2019 with type one, I’m struggling a bit as she is always peaking high, especially after meals - I’m trying everything, she eats really healthy, I get her to exercise after each meal and I am now injecting insulin 20/30 mins before meal. Nurse has said because she’s young it’s common to be up and down a lot but bloods high most of the time it’s really stressing me out as trying so hard and worried about long term affect. If I give her more insulin then after the high she will have a low so ratios are correct, if anyone has any advice I would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Harriet

Hi @Harriet S ,

Welcome to the forum.

What insulins is your daughter prescribed? What are her numbers prior to a meal & how high are the peaks subsequently.

Sounds like your are doing all the right stuff with the dosage timing..

What sort of exercise is your child doing after the meals?

Blood glucose going up between meals can mean not enough basal. Testing basal between meals would help clarify that.

Thanks for you messages, she’s on degulac for long acting and novorapid for meals. She varies pre meal mostly around 9/10 but her peaks can go up to 18 some days. Exercise involves either long walks which really helps but if we are around the house it’s running around the garden. We have been adjusting long acting insulin as she was waking up in hypo a lot so that has been lowered which is does seem since lowering it has made her higher throughout the day, yesterday I have upped it again so see if that helps for the day as long as it doesn't make her low in the mornings.

Hi,

This link to basal testing may help explain. https://www.mysugr.com/en/blog/basal-rate-testing/

Getting the long acting right (Or as solid as possible?) is the foundation. Bit like building a house?
