6 years ago today my best friend brother died after phoning for an ambulance after having an epileptic seizure, police arrested him instead and he died in custody

Since being diagnosed this has worried me a lot, if it can happen to an epileptic it can happen to a diabetic. He told the paramedics that he had had a seizure, no one believed him and as a consequence he lost his life.
I wear my medical ID, never leaves my neck, do the police actually recognize it??? they thought he was 'acting' and was 'drunk' as diabetics in DKA get a pear like smelling breath would we be assumed to be 'acting up' and 'drunk'
Today this is really playing on my mind a lot both the police and paramedics was found to have made mistakes and tried to cover up there errors how many more times will it happen?

That is a tragic story and we can only hope lessons have been learnt.

TBH your doing the right thing wearing the medical ID as this should alert the emergency services to your diabetes, no one can say for sure if these sort of mistakes will happen again but thankfully they are very few and far between, it also helps if you tell as many people as possible about your diabetes in case of an incident.....for example work colleagues and friends.
