My blood test results

Some of you may of read my first post about how to get tested/diagnosed as i'd been experiencing a lot of diabetes symptoms...anyhow i had my fasting blood test last week.
Hadn't heard from the doctor since so i presumed everything must be fine so i phoned the receptionist just to check anyway today and she tells me everything was fine apart from my sugar which needs testing again in a couple of months but she could tell me no more.

Any idea what this could mean? Does it mean my test last week was borderline?
Im going to go see GP again next week and see what she says about it

Hi Bex,
Sounds like your on the borderline, have a look round the forum and try to make adjustments to your diet paying special attention to carbohydrates, and you may avoid joining the club :D :D :D

Lets know how you get on.

Regards Graham

Hi Bex,

I think Graham is spot on, which is why they will want to have a second look. As Ken said, if you cut back on the carbs just a little, you will do yourself a power of good and will probably sail past the second test.

The best way to find out what it means is to get your own meter and do this for a while

http://loraldiabetes.blogspot.com/2009/ ... -test.html

this will give you a bigger picture than a single spot test, and also give you a means to handle it.

Type 2 is a progressive disease and the actual diagnostic cutoff point is set far higher than the point at which you can start to improve your condition through diet, so if you start today maybe you'll never cross that line!

I went to the dr today and found out my fasting result was 6.9 (isn't that pretty high??).
We had a discussion over my diet and she says what i eat is good, but we have found a few changes i can make, and do more exercise, and hopefully the next test in 10 weeks will have a better result.
Fingers crossed!

Hi Bex,

This is an extract from the NHS web information on glucose tolerance tests:

A diagnosis of diabetes is made if the level of glucose in the fasting blood sample is over 6.7 mmol/l and/or the levels in the second sample are 10 mmol/l.

I'm afraid that on that basis you just tip into the diabetes camp. I'd be interested to hear what dietary changes your doctor has recommended. Hopefully they are not the standard "eat more starchy carbs with every meal" mantra, because that will only increase your weight and your blood sugar levels. As a dietitian has remarked previously on this forum, doctors are not trained in diet and nutrition and really shouldn't give dietary advice.

She didn't say too much about the food, just telling me what to watch and whats ok etc etc

She said if my blood was 7 or over it was diabetes, if i go by the info you have put, like you say it looks like i am diabetic. Confused now!

Hi Bex,

Sorry if I have confused you, but you really need to take this up with your GP. Being given information by a nurse that is at odds with the NHS definition of diabetes is something that shouldn't happen, but sadly does happen only too frequently. This is the link to the NHS 24 hour advice website that I was quoting from.

http://www.nhs24.com/content/default.as ... ctionID=24

Can I suggest that you print it out, take it to your GP and and explain that what you have been told seems to be at odds with the NHS information, so who is right. I'm not for a moment suggesting that you should try to get your nurse into trouble, but how many other patients might she have misdiagnosed?

Thanks for the info, it was actually the doctor i saw not the nurse. It also said on her screen that to be diabetes it has to be over 7. I'll go back and see her
