hello
my brother had type 1 diabetes for many years and he had problems stabalising it despite injecting several times a day.
in late may he got pheumonia and was taken to hospital.
he was put in the hdu and was given introvenious drugs and food.
he was very ill and all the family was asked to come in.
then all his organs started to fail, and he sadly passed away in june this year.
hardening of the arteries was one of the causes of death.

my question is:

could his death have been avoided if his diabetes had been stabelised earlier or would it have happened anyway?
also as i am a diabetic too, am i in line for this too?

There's no way to know if better blood glucose control could have prevented your brother's death. However it certainly seems that GOOD control( BG remaining close to 5) does generally protect health.
You can do nothing better for yourself than to keep good control. Try to use diet and exercise as the main part of your care. Relying on medication to do everything for you isn't the healthiest way

Hi.

First of all I want to offer my condolences to you over the sad loss of your brother. I know how it feels. I too lost my older brother to cardiac problems. It is hard to reconcile something like this and I feel your pain. Right at this minute I am sure you are searching for a reason, something to answer your questions.

I don't really have any answers for the reason why.......it is just life - and death. The sad fact of our lives. :(

As for your questions here.....who knows ? It is a fact, that the better the Diabetes is controlled then the less complications there are likely to be. As to if it could have been avoided, possibly. Then again, the heart problem may have been there for years and the Diabetes may have just aggravated it. No one can say ?

Any Diabetic who does not control the condition on a daily basis is in line for complications. Take control now and your future is a much better prospect ?

I thought at the beginning of this year my days were numbered due to all sorts of diabetes related conditions. Since then and by taking firm control of my Diabetes, my life, my destiny. I have reversed many of the problems that I had and also lost nearly 4 stone in weight. I am healthier, fitter, livelier - ALL due to the advice from people on this forum. So I owe this place something, that's one of the main reasons I post here now. Trying to stop people making the same mistakes I did 12 years ago, mistakes that nearly killed me. Poor advice from HCP's. I am my own Physician now.

We can help and support you. We can advise you. Only YOU can control your own destiny.

hello cugila,
thank you for your reply.
well done on what you have achieved. i hope i can do the same.
im trying very hard to change my eating habits as i do not want to end up like my brother.
ive been getting tingling in my toes and cramp, and like shocks/electricity in my foot, im also cold all the time.
i went to the dr today, he arranged blood tests for me, and i have to see my dr a week after that.
i hope its aneamia instead of diabetic problems with my feet.
but this has scared me, i have 2 children who need their mother.
im determined to do it, and i believe coming here is the first step.
thanks again
take care.

There are folks here who will be able to advise you far more efficiently that I, however I just wished to offer my condolences for you sad loss, and to wish yoou good luck in taking control of your diabetes.

I'm sorry for your loss. You simply don't know what would have happened if your brothers diabetes had been managed differently. Not everything is diabetes :?

However, my dad died last year, aged 81. He'd had T2 since his early/mid 50s, I guess, he had his first heart attack at 58. He died of a bowel infarction, a known complication of insulin use and heart failure. He had numerous health problems, almost all known diabetic complications.

I was diagnosed earlier this year, not a surprise. I'm motivated by not wanting to end up like my dad, his quality of life was very poor in his last few years. I have brought my HbA1c of 7.8% at diagnosis down to 6% and I'm aiming for normal blood sugars, but my dad never quite got the hang of managing his blood sugar and went on to insulin about 3 years before he died. I'd like to have the same health risks as a non-diabetic and I think keeping my blood sugar at normal levels is the way to do it.

Regarding your current health worries, I have had some problems with my feet, not all diabetic related (I had a foot injury about 2 years ago), but I had some loss of sensation around the time I was diagnosed, as well as temperature senssations. Since I reduced the blood glucose numbers the sensation and temerature sensations have all improved, as have loads of other niggly little health problems.

Take a look at http://www.bloodsugar101.com I found it a really helpful resource and it gave me real hope that I could manage my blood sugar and my health. Then I found my way here, by a very happy accident, and the support here has been great :D
