Hi everyone,
My daughter, Ellie, is not yet 3 and was diagnosed with type 1 last Thursday. She has come out of hospital today after a torrid time picking up a virus. She is currently not eating well (at all) which I am sure is because of the sickess she had. Any tips would be much appreciated. We are giving her 2 units of Lantus and, because of the tiny amunt of food she's taking on, she's only had 1 1/2 units of insulin today. She still had an afternoon hypo. First day out. A simple, 'it gets better' would help!

Thanks

Hi Elliesdad,
It does get better, really it does! My younger daughter was diagnosed at two and a half, her older sister at eight (the year before). It's really horrible at first and such a steep learning curve, but you will get accustomed to it all much sooner than you think, simply because you have no choice.

If Ellie is hovering around hypo a lot of the time let her sip on a sugary drink, or have some sugary ice lolly - whatever it takes to keep her out of a hypo and hydrated.

Any questions just ask and we'll all do our best to answer. Hang in there!
Best wishes,
Sue

Hi Ellies dad. My heart and love go out to you both. My son is now 11, he was diagnosed at 4. At the time I was shell shocked and didnt think I could cope! But now it is second nature. Things will get better. Scott does all his own blood tests and injections and Ellie will too. It was me that had difficulty coming to terms with it, Scott just accepted it and got on with it. I wish you all the best. P.s. This site is a god send, it gave me my sanity back!

Hi again.
I would also like to add that the best thing I found was a blood tester that could be used on the forearm. Scott absolutely detested finger pricking(understandably) and it became a battle ground. Then I was told about the free style monitor which we could use on the arm! (Apart from in an emergency, then it needs to be done on fingers). Please ask your diabetes nurse about it, it is so much less barbaric for a child! Also when they changed us over from using a syringe to using a pen type, this to made a big difference to us. I wish you all the best.

Hi Ellie's dad,

My daughter Grace was diagnosed a month ago with Type one and she just turned 2yrs old in February. It will get better, Grace has also been suffering from a virus this week and her bloods have been all over the place as she wouldn't eat very much but she will get her appetite back as it starts to pass. I know that it is all very scary at the moment and I am also still on the that very steep learning curve that you are embarking on but even now after a month I can finally see the light at the end of it all. Our children's nurse gave me a magic piece of advice, what ever happens do not beat yourself up about what happens when you first get out as you are still feeling your way through the mine field. This site is great, everyone is so helpful and friendly. We are stationed in Germany and so help and advice is not readily available to us and this site has been a mine of information and help. Someone advised me on here to try and tempt Grace with a little bit of everything and let her try eating different things which got her eating again, just a thought. I hope Ellie is feeling better soon and things start to improve for you all. Take care Helena

Dear All,
Many thaks for the support and advice! As I type, Ellie is eating strawberries and watching Alice in Wonderland. BMs are up and life already seems better. I suspect this board could be a rela life saver!

Many thaks again, and good luck to all of you too.
