Hello, my 5 year old jack russell was diagnosed in October with diabetes! I would to speak with other people who have dogs or cats with diabetes! My dog is my life and my best friend! I love her soooooo much! Please contact me if anyone else is going through the same thing! Thank you :)

I'm sorry, much as I love animals and sympathise with you, this site is for human diabetes only. You will find plenty of dog or animal forums where diabetes is mentioned. Also, animal and human diabetes is not the same. I suggest you look on one of these forums.

Whilst i agree with Daisy you could try only feeding fresh meat or tripe if money is short and cut out all the tinned foods which is high in cereal as any carbohydrate your dog eats will raise its blood sugars. No biscuits or other carby treats.

Try Googling canine diabetes I'm sure there will be lots of info out there.

And good luck from another Jack Russell owner

Sid,
Thanks for the positive response.
BTW the vet will probably be better at treating the dog's diet for diabetes than do most GPs

She is seeing her vet! I was trying to reach out to other people who have animals with diabetes and I can not find any web sites :)

Ask your Vet if they know of any support groups for owners of dogs with diabetes.......sounds unlikely but you never know if you don't ask!

We can always rely on Sid!

+1 Sid Bonkers

I was just about to post a couple of those links, you beat me to it and came up trumps.
Incindentally my boss told me a few moments ago that his sister has a dog diagnosed with diabetes, they have gone over to meat/tripe feeding, no cereals or treats at all, Swag now prefers a good old bone anyway.
Make sure well meaning dog friendly people dont give the dog any treats, only yesterday I stopped sa lovely elderly couple from giving our dog chocolate biscuits because she was begging!! Chocolate is poisonous to pets and I dread to think what it would do toa diabetic dog.

Incidentally Swag is now 12 yesrs old, diagnosed when she was 5.

I hope all works out for you and your doggy.
All the best

Hi OP,
Not to sure as it's many years since my dog died of old age (almost 16) but I seem to remember being told or reading that when dogs develope diabetes they have no choice but to have insulin.
The vets tried to tell me that he needed specialist doggy food (high price from them) and insulin to match.
I worked out his insulin needs to the food he ate and he was fine. When he had a hypo he was given glucose and milk.
No idea where or how or why he developed diabetes because he had never been ill in his life a very fit active working collie. Then for the first time since he was a puppy he did a puddle in the house and became very upset over it as such a clean dog. Straight down the vets he went and as they say the rest is history.
