I was diagnosed with diabetes about 2 years ago, it was a big shock, but I new I would probably get it as it is in the family, I never eat sweet or fatty food so I thought I eat quite well, I went to the doctor and had a glucose tolerance test which I did once a year, at this time I was suffering major stress that I had never experienced before in my life, my test came back clear, as I was hoping it would be. I also have a deformity in my foot and leg and was in hospital a lot, about 1 week after the test I developed an infection in my foot which gave me a temp of nearly 40 degreases c. I was admitted to hospital, it took them about a week to bring my temp down, I was in hospital that time for about a month. this is when they gave me a another test and I had diabetes's, all on,the doctors said because of my high temp and severe stress this is what bought it, my life is getting back to normal now, we cant do anything about what lot we are dealt with in life, we just have to learn to live with it with a smile.

Hi @sundancerau I'm sure stress would have been a significant trigger, weight can be a cause and an effect, and you were not alone in thinking that a low-sweet low-fat diet was a good option. For diabetics it's not just the sweet things but the carbohydrates that are the problem and they need to be significantly reduced. Have a read around and ask any questions. You might find the thread linked in my signature below to be useful.

Hello Cocky,

The cause and effect are the same for most of us T2 s

The cause and effect is overweight, Get that sorted sooner than later,

Good grief!
What a ridiculous over simplification.

@sundancerau
Please do not take forge's comment at face value.
I have no idea whether you are over weight or not (10% of type 2 diabetics are not overweight), but I do know that there are many other causes and effects, as you yourself have experienced (genetic factors, stress and meds, to name a few).

Weightloss is a good idea for anyone who is over weight. Especially over weight type 2s. And weightloss may reduce or reverse the symptoms of type 2, but please don't believe any over-simplified statements.

And welcome! Hope you find the forum as helpful as I have done. :)

Edited to add: forge's posts have been deleted, but I've left my comment, and the quote. If anyone (including @forge) would like me to delete the post, just let me know...

Also be aware that the 10% or so of normal weight T2s are often mis-diagnosed late onset T1s, so if you are not overweight do discuss the appropriate tests with the GP
