My Experiences

Well, you know what to ditch another time! CARBS!

Just keep testing and note your results against the food eaten and when you work it out it will be pretty obvious what you need to cut out or down. 8)

Hmm! I do tend to eat quite a lot of bread.. I always knock a 'sarnie' up when I'm feeling peckish. Maybe that's not such a good idea anymore then.

Try putting the 2 burgers in one grain roll and having a salad with it. Might work?

Hi Jack,
You have got to work out what is right for you. We can all give you advice but your results when testing will be the answer. Some of us can eat more carbs than others and some choose to cut complex carbs out altogether. You have to be happy with what you are eating and your results will be different from someone else eating exactly the same. Once you start a food diary and test more it will become clearer.
Might be a good idea to do some planning and shop in advance so that you have all the necessary food. Fresh is best and stay away from processed foods. Incorporate plenty of veggies in your meals and drink plenty of water. Are you exercising at all as this will help too.
No question is silly as we all started where you are now.

Catherine.

Thanks Catherine.
It's obviously going to take me time to adjust to my new way of living and eating. For the last 50 years I've been able to eat and drink as much of whatever I want whenever I've wanted to. I've never ever had to think about what I'm eating at all so this is all very new to me, I don't know what's high in sugar, I don't know what is carbs, I don't know what is low in sugar... In fact I don't know much about food at all really, other than we need it to survive. I think a dietician is probably what I need.
Anyway, I've only been dianosed for just over a week so I'm sure that, with my Diabetes nurse/doctors advice, along with the experienced folk here and my medication it will all work out fine.
And of course... Test! test! test! :D

Jack any drop of Bg from where you were is worth celebrating.
However it may be the moment to inform you that non-diabetics have Bgs around[usually below]5 pretty much all the time and that anything over 7 is the road to complications.
Thus now you can build on your success and get into the safe zone.
Don't depend on gliclazide alone to control the BG. It can cause Hypos and often causes weight gain.
Help it along by giving it less glucose to work on[WARNING!: starch is a polymer of glucose]
Your eyesight will settle once you have control.
Hana
good luck and happy testing.

I'm still testing... :D
So far the lowest I have got is a fasting test that I did which was 7.4
During the day it is averaging around 11 :?
More testing....

Hello again Jack. :)

Well done - it sounds like you are going in the right direction! :D

Thanks Synonym :D
Something went a bit pear shaped today though... I had a bacon roll for lunch with a Cappuccino - bad, bad mistake.
I did a test about an hour later and it was 17.5  No more Cappuccino for me :?

I am sure there is a song that goes:

"Ditch the rolls Jack
and don't you eat them no more, no more,
ditch the rolls Jack
and don't you eat them no more"

Well.. after 2 or 3 weeks on the Gliclazide (4 a day) and a couple of weeks on Metmorfin (2 a day), all together.. and still high B/C levels I had a one and half hour meeting this evening with my diabetes nurse/doctor.
She has now decided that, based on my test results and the medication not doing a lot, that I am type 1. From tomorrow the tablets are no more and the insulin injections begin, twice a day to start off, possibly rising to four times a day in the not too distant future.
Not the end of the world but the beginning of a new learning curve, so it's over to the Type 1 board for me :?

Looks like you might get to eat those rolls after all, Jack! :)

Hope all goes well with the new regime - lots more to get your head round.
