Hi Folks
I've just had my first hypo. As my BG is usually on the high(ish) side, whilst I'm still building up my list of safe foods, I was quite shocked. The hypo wasn't what I expected either...no sweating, fast heartbeat etc...just suddenly very dizzy & spinny. I took a spoonful of honey, a Haribo jelly sweet and followed that up with a glass of milk & a slice of LivLife bread. Just checked my BG & it's gone up to 4.8 now. How often should I test after a hypo, what is the appropriate amount of time between testing following a hypo AND did I manage it appropriately? Please advise.
Thank you

Hi Alison,

I can't help as I don't take meds and have never had a hypo. However, I see you are on Gliclazide. This is a drug that makes your pancreas produce more insulin. The lower carbs you eat, the less insulin you need for dealing with it. It may be you need a medication review with your doctor - I would contact him tomorrow if I were you.

x2 what bluetit said, being sunday morning there, you may neeed a 'walk in' dr to give you permission to reduce your Glic tonight.

and have a carby/fatty meal that will digest during the night

Hi Bluetit
I've just accessed my GP online service & booked an appointment for 6.30pm tomorrow. Still feeling weird but I'm sure it'll pass. Thanks for replying. Ali. :)

Thanks Jack412. I'll give NHS Direct a call for advice. Seeing my GP tomorrow so at least I'll be reviewed.

Hi. First hypo is always a bit of a shock but nothing to worry about, and you dealt with it perfectly well. It's worth having jelly babies or similar with you for the time being while your body adjusts to gliclazide. It would be good to discuss with your DN or GP how you might vary size and timing of your dosage -- it may take a bit of experimenting to get it right (it certainly did with me). If you have been running high BGs then you will find that you get hypo-like symptoms when your numbers aren't that low. Reducing carbs and plenty of exercise will mean that your body will come to tolerate lower BGs, as well as hopefully reducing the amount of gliclazide that you need. Good luck!
