Just had the diabetic Nurse from my hospital call me with my results. Last time was 81 and this time is 75 which she said was good. But I am waiting for a replacement knee operation which can't go ahead until i get a result below 69 and she suggests I should go on Insulin as a short-term option to get my operation done and then I could come off it again. She also seemed to think I was taking Mounjaro ( I'm not) and suggested I up my Gliclazide to 160mg twice a day until I decide about Insulin ( I told her I'm already on that dose of Gliclazide...one 160mg tablet twice a day....she had to go check that they even made it in that strength!). Anyway, I am reluctant to take Insulin, I'm not 100% sure why exactly, but feel that if I take it, I have nowhere else to go. IS it possible to only take it short-term? Or is it generally a forever drug? I need to have the knee op, just can't seem to get the HBa1c down below 69

@SJ1812 There are quite a few members who have taken insulin for a relatively short time before coming off it (under medical supervision). Some of them were initially thought to be Type 1's before discovering that they were not.
I can't help further as I have no personal experience of any diabetes medication, being a 'skinny' Type 2 and having taken the Low Carb route to remission.

I was in a position similar to yours. My HbA1c was so high that my GP wanted me to go on insulin. I declined. In my case, I didn't understand how to reduce my glucose level naturally and was following a much reduced sweets, low fat, highish carb diet, not calorie counting as I didn't need to lose much weight, according to BMI. Then I found out I had bilateral huge staghorn kidney stones, a very dangerous situation. When I was finally offered surgery (a year later!), it was refused in the last minute because my A1c was 88. That upset me hugely, but also woke me up. I learned about the danger of uncontrolled diabetes and the effectiveness of reducing carb, which for me meant higher protein and fat, as I was not trying to lose weight, although I did lose some unintentionally. I had surgery 4 and 1/2 months after that, with an A1c of 52. I still need further surgery, but I'm working hard to control my diabetes with food regime and existing medication.

Only you can decide what's right for you, with your DN's input. But you haven't mentioned adjusting your diet. Also I find monitoring my glucose levels with a continuous glucose monitor helped me a lot. Some of my rises seem caused by poor sleep and chronic stress. Lately, if my CGM is to be believed, my glucose levels (also BP) are so low that I need to have a talk with my GP about my medication. (7-day average now 5.5 mmol/L)

Good luck with your knee op.
