Hi All, and Happy New Year...

Over the last few weeks I have been keeping some careful records of the amount of carbs I have with my main meal, and the subsequent 2 hour post - prandial reading.

This has proved really useful to me in managing my type 2, because, although the results do vary a bit (and there are some surprising results), there is as you would expect a strong correlation.

I therefore know that, at the moment, I can eat about 60g of carbs with a meal, and be pretty certain that I will not be over 7.8 2 hours later. It also shows me that which food I eat matters less than the total number of carbs (Although I have to be careful with rice). This to me means greater peace of mind and less testing.

The figures are below if they are of any interest, but I wonder if anyone else had different ways of managing?

Which all goes to show that having a meter is important in managing your diabetes. I see that NICE now recommends having a meter in the Oct 2012 Pathways update for T2 so GPs who say otherwise are out of date (or trying to control budgets)

Absolutely,it's all about eating to your meter,no gimmicks or sorcery involved,we're all at individual levels with what we can tolerate and it's great to see others being pro-active with managing their condition!

Best wishes

Paul

I was diagnosed in May 2009 and spent 18 months eating to my meter, also lost 4 stones in weight. It eventually became apparent that I could manage my by now "reversed" diabetes by sticking to an exercise regime and keeping carbs at around 50g per day. I now use my meter only as an occasional pulse point check. I also take my BP periodically. At my last review in December, HBA1C was 5.3, BP was 120/64 and cholesterol was 3.4. Havent touched metformin for 3 years.

All the best - Steve
