Hello and good day to everyone. My name is David and I am a 43 year old type 2 diabetic from Michigan, USA.

I was diagnosed with type 2 diabetes about 4.5 years ago, and I have been taking only metformin twice a day. My numbers are usually around 110-125 in the AM. Through the day, they are in good range, that is, unless I eat a bit more than I should- which is not too often. Anyways, the last two days, I have been waking up and checking my numbers and they have been around 130-140. This has happened in the past, but not too often. It worries me and I am unsure why this has happened. Last night, I stopped eating ( and it was an above average sized meal, but not too big ) around 9 pm. My sugar went up to 170 and then around midnight it was 97. I had taken my pill with the meal, but like I said, upon waking up, it was 135. That is out of good range, I think, because my range is usually lower. I have read that the good range to wake up to stops at 130. Is this because of the larger meal? Should I be worried? Any advice and support, even on a regular basis would be cool. Thank you and have a great day.

Hi. Yes, the good range for fasting ends around 130 (7.2mmol in UK units) but overnight liver dumps can affect the readings a bit. Are you overweight and do you low-carb? Diet and weight can have a big impact on T2 blood sugar. If you are normal weight it is always possible, but less likely, that are a late onset T1. What are your typical readings 2 hours after a meal?

Hello, and thank you for responding.

I am overweight, yes. I am about 6'1" and weigh about 275. I have always been big, but more heavy than outwardly fat looking...so, it does not appear that I have a lot of unused fat, but I do...and I am overweight. Does that make sense? As far as low carb diet, yes, but its off an on. Last night, by 9 pm, I had taken one metformin and for dinner, I had a piece of steak, a small piece of chicken strips, some veggies and some stuffing. And then I had a piece of no sugar added blueberry pie, which was a smaller piece..we were taking my mom out for mothers day, so I ate a little more? I dunno. I looked at my charts and I have had numbers over 130 in the AM before, but not two days in a row for a while. I have also been stressed out at work lately too. Typical readings two hours after a meal are around 160-170 if I eat more, but usually around 140-150.
