My Mother

Hi I need some help my mother is 84 years old she has had Diabetes for the last 20 years & injects twice aday over the last few weeks she has been quite ill & her blood sugar is reading at 18 today the nurses do not seem 2 be 2 worry but i am she lives alone can any one help or offer any advice on what to do as i am not sure what action i should take

I'm sorry to hear that you mum's having a difficult time, and the nurses don't exactly sound switched on.
It's important she gets help to control her blood sugar as a priority, because illness will take longer to clear otherwise. The possibility of secondary infection is greatly increased too. Try to ensure she has plenty of water to drink, and I'd also suggest a correction dose of a little fast-acting insulin to bring her numbers into line.
If she has had diabetes for some time, she should have a good idea how much she needs in order to lower her 18 down to a more healthy 5 or so, without risking hypoglycemia.
