I am now 62. When I was 13, I had Osteomyelitis. I was the first case anyone in the area had ever seen and so it took a long time to diagnose. By the time they did, I had septicaemia. I then went on to hold an enviable record, for the highest fever they'd ever seen anyone survive.(105deg F)
My mum told me today that our GP( sadly no longer with us) told her when I was finally discharged from hospital to his care, that he wasn't worried about how I would do as a young person, but that problems of all kinds might start from about 30. Looking back, he was right. So far I've overcome or coped with all of them. Unfortunately, my mother passed a T2 gene on to me, which was triggered about 8 - 10 years ago. I was diagnosed on 4th July 2003. Yes I am overweight , but that started after the osteomyelitis too. I was a slim child, having been a breast fed baby. So now I think I was right in my suspicions that my several endocrine problems stemmed from that one bout of illness or it's treatment with streptomycin.
In the end though it makes no difference. I have T2 and have to cope with it.They may have known that streptomycin might cause damage, but they were faced with a dying child. and I lived to be a grandmother
Still it feels better to have an idea, other than sheer gluttony, which I didn't and don't suffer from.
