My dad has been my rock and major support in my quest to live healthily since my diabetes diagnosis 2 years ago. He's undergone several heart operations in the past, including a double heart bypass and as a result of this he has changed his lifestyle - he lost weight and took up exercising.. He hikes, runs, attends the gym and recently took up cycling. He doesn't eat bread, potatoes etc.. doesn't drink or smoke and doesn't have a sweet tooth - something I obviously didn't inherit lol.

Anyway, he's just found he's diabetic and is really upset about it. Neither he nor I understand it, how can someone who really does look after himself the way he does end up with this awful disease? He's not sure how they are going to treat it, he's got his first appt with the DN next week..

Feel so gutted for him :-(

Sorry to hear that - fingers crossed he can deal with it with diet and exercise as he has been doing, with minimal or even no medication.

Really sorry about your dad's diagnosis, hope all works out well for him and he continues with his lifestyle changes.

I'm sorry to hear you and your dad have been knocked for six by his unexpected diagnosis.

I hope you'll be able to support him the way he has helped you since you were diagnosed.

That's the thing wtih diabetes, the papers give us sensational headlines that if your overweight and don't exercise and eat too much sugar, drink too much blah blah blah then you are heading for diabetes hell! Unfortunately no seems to have told diabets this so it strikes randomly and without discretion. Hope your dad can get himself on track after being knocked back like this, but direct him to this site and he will find lots of support and combined with your support he will hopefully get his head round it.

DB effects us all in different ways .. When I found out I was diabetic .. My first thoughts were .. After all my heart problems this diabetes is a manageable problem .. So no problem .. Yes I understand all the long term problems it can bring .. But that's long term .. My heart attacks were making me look at things being very short term. So I just want to say .. Tell your dad it's a condition that can be managed .. It's not the end of his world it's the start of a new life style .. Hay he's in the zipper club .. We are made of strong stuff .. Not going to let a bit of sugar knock us down for to long.
Hope he's feeling better soon .. And he's lucky to have your support
