why can't everyone get on........
what a rubbish day

starts last night when following a 61 carb meal properly bolused for on a 5.2 pre meal BG..............

by 9:10 i was 6.8 cool he says to self
10:30 and 12.6 -- *** is going on - eaten this meal loads of times and never had a spike before
retest to make sure not a bad finger etc etc ---- 12.3 so it is a 1.3 correction.....
bedtime now at 11:20pm test comes in at 12.1 :( so pump gives me a 1.55 correction and off to bed I go thinking ....**** will be a bit high tomorrow ( expecting a 7.5-10.0 type reading )

next morning ( today )
6:55am first test at waking 16.3 -- whaatttt !!!!!!!!!!
8.35u correction and sit it out ..................
next test 10.00am 11.2 **** .....not falling fast enough ( 1.45u correction )

ok so here are my test through out the day
11:20am 11.8 ( 3.05 correction ) all are pump suggested
12:05pm 11.9 0 correction
1:00pm 11.1 ate lunch of 67 carbs -- first food today ) and bolus of 17.45u --- but here is where the fun really starts

as bolus going in start to smell insulin -- and sure enough adhesive is wet --- so pod change ( using existing vial )

next test
3:10pm 10.7 -- not pleased but thinking that give new pod time to settle on top of meal ( plus 1.1u correction )
4:25pm 12.4  ( plus 2.5u correction )

6:10pm 13.9 ( plus 6.10u correction ) at this point add a 50% increase in basal rate for 2 hours as well

7:00pm 13.9 bolus for 35 carb evening meal ( but don't eat any of it) at 5.0u plus a 6u manual pen bolus

8:00pm 11.5 ( no correction allowed )i then eat plate of protein meal salmon plus prawns plus ham ( yes weird but hey ho )
do another pod change with a brand new vial of insulin from fridge -- waiting for for first test on new pod at approx 9:30pm

arrrrrgggghhhhhhhh !! :(

Welcome to pumping Himtoo

I think you have got to change your basals again to get bg ok again but whether its all just a flash in the pan and bg starts to change again and you have to put the basals back to what they were, well who knows? Have you gained weight at all as that can mean more basal or is there something else that might cause the bg change?
I no longer eat much carb anymore as it causes too much uncertainty so its easier for me to eat lower carb just in case bg starts playing up.

thanks for responding iHs -- just going for a test to see if newest changes have helped

LOL -- have to laugh ( would cry otherwise ) 2.9 just now so obviously either bad site or bad insulin

just deciding on the carbs to treat -- Haha !!!!!!!!!

Hi @himtoo , hope you're feeling good this morning. What a horrid day - I had a similar experience a couple of days ago and it turned out to be a bad site that wasn't quite right long before the cannula itself had 'symptoms'!

It's such a pain particularly when everything goes well normally and then WHAM, sugars through the roof!

Hope today is a good one.

:)

morning @Snapsy

yes much better thanks :)

good enough to rejoin the main what are your BG's before bed and in the morning thread even !!

5.1 before bed
and 7.0 this morning

It's good to remember that insulin resistance kicks in on the higher readings so you need to over ride the pump sometimes. Was your meal high fat by any chance?

Looks like you've followed the correct protocol @himtoo, it's annoying when these things happen but don't let it get you down.

Hope today is a better day for you:)

not really
80 grams pasta , mushrooms , spring onion , salmon , and a sauce made from veg stock and low fat creme fraiche
it is a staple dish in our house -- i make a variant of it about once a week

but agree with the insulin resistance at higher readings

If it's any consolation I too couldn't get below 10 all day yesterday, I blamed the weather, once I'd ruled everything else out. Today is a hill walk so taking a bag of jelly babies as in case my exercise setting isn't right ;)

Hi @himtoo, I find that most of my stubborn sugars tend to be pump/cannular related. When I correct I disconnect and let the insulin flow through out of the cannular so I have a record. Then I correct with a pen into the thigh muscle. I find that's quicker.
I've heard that some people think the site can get a bit 'waterlogged'. I take roughly 25 units a day on the pump but if I go above that the site doesn't work as long.
Other reasons? The wind has changed direction, it's raining, it's sunny, I didn't put my lucky socks on ......

thanks for that :)- with the omnipod i don't have those filling the cannula and tube issues

still fairly new to this pumping though and the more i read other peoples experience I find i am becoming more of the opinion not to let things go as long as I did yesterday before making the 2 pod changes and different vial of insulin
( I wasn't wearing my lucky socks actually -- they were in the wash ;) )

LOL, and such a good point @Mrs Vimes - sometimes there just IS no rhyme or reason, is there? - that's what I find the most frustrating thing of all in my life with diabetes!

:)

Do we need a 'lucky sock' emoticon?

Edited for typos

Couldn't agree more, it was realising that there was no rhyme or reason that oddly enough helped me to accept type 1 more, what worked one day and didn't the next just presents the fact that if I had taken the right amount of insulin, and was running high so ruled out stress, exercise, hormones, weather, lucky socks or lunar cycle that it was sometimes best to go to bed and start again the next day ;)

Aww @himtoo *hugs*

Yep sometimes there is just absolutely no reason what so ever for these readings, you did right changing set, insulin etc, personally I would have done that a little sooner than you did but as one of your first 'pumping nightmares' you did well and didn't throw omipod out the window which deserves a round of applause - although I'm sure you did definitely contemplate doing that

I was staggered to realise the random nature of all this only very, very recently. Over decades it had been drummed into me that if I always do the 'right' things the numbers would be right. The fact that they weren't seemed therefore an indication that I 'must try harder'..... But I've finally realised that I'm only human and some factors one just can't control!
:)

i still don't think psychologically i can get my head round this concept totally , but i try to .

It's part science that allows us somewhere to start from and turns into a BLACK ART within a short time. There are that many things that affect you. Going back, when I was on mdi, I had a particular yr 9 class I had to bolus 3 units for.
