Hi as above my readings are high. Today 12.9, why is this? I felt sick and sweated profusely......

Hi there- have you eaten anything usually carby today ? Blood sugar can be spiked by many things- you may have a virus if you have been feeling unwell. That could do it.

That's probably why then. Many diabetics find that combo too high in carbs. Ordinarily that would be a healthy lunch/snack but baked beans ( a 220g can) are around 13% sugar-if you look at the total carb content around 100g of baked beans would be 14g of carb so a whole small can is about 28g carb plus the slice of bread......

Are you following the low carb eating plan ? lots of good recipes on here to inspire you but beans and bread are better avoided xx

Many people here on the forum follow the low carb/high fat mode of eating to control their diabetes.

Are you on medication for your diabetes ? If so you need to take that into account when low carbing to avoid dropping your blood sugar too low.

Essentially all carbohydrate turns to sugar during the process of metabolism so if you are T2 then you are carbohydrate intolerant and need to restrict your intake. The advice that the dietary advice that the NHS give make it hard to achieve your optimum BG readings without taking medication.

You need to avoid/severely limit your intake of bread, pasta, potato, cereals, watch starchy veg like carrots/sweet corn/parsnips and be wary of fruit with a high sugar content-so avoid bananas and grapes which are naturally very sugary. There are lots and lots of things that you can safely eat instead and test yourself 2 hours after eating to see how you react to different foods- we are all different.

Swap toast and breakfast cereal for Greek yoghurt and berries or have eggs and bacon. Don't have sandwiches for lunch but have an omelette, soup or salads with cheese and nuts, oily fish is also a good one. Lots of ideas here on the forum-have a read around. If I can figure out how to do it, I will try and tag Daisy who has some good info.

As well as lowering blood sugar it also helps you lose weight (if you want to do that) I began low-carbing last summer to keep Hubby company (he's the T2 not me) but found that I also lost 2.5 stone in the process.

hope that helps :)

The carb content of baked beans is swamped by the effect of the sauce accompanying them. There can be a significant difference between different brands, and generally the economy brands tend to have more added sugar,

I use 5 grain batch loaf bread myself, and find it low GI .GL so that I can tolerate a slice, especially if I use a generous amount of butter on it to slow the digestion. I find Tiger Bread to be an absolute killer for my bgl control.
