My Step Dad is diabetic and won't listen....

Update time on my Step Dad who wouldn't listen to any suggestions I made over his diet and lifestyle.

Got a Glucomen LX sent to him and he got a script from his doctor. He is taking his readings before and after meals and has just rung me and explained his latest results.

Fasting level in the morning 7.6. 2 hours later after kippers and coffee...6.2. (Yesterday)

Today. Fasting level when he woke was LO. Looked in the book and it said that means a low blood sugar result. After kippers and coffee it rose to 6.4.

I said to see his Diabetic nurse as it is possible now he is taking low carbing seriously he may need to maybe lower his Metformin.

He said when the DN upped his pills to 4 Metformin per day he was eating lots of bad sugary foods. Is it possible that he could come down on his meds then?

He and my Mum have suddenly getting very interested in food and the way it effects blood sugars. Never thought I would see the day.

I shall print out Daisys welcome post to all new folk on this forum and give it to him.

Thanks to all for your input on this....

All is good !!

That is good news Zola, Well done,
Your mum must be well pleased with your step dad getting better control of his diabetes.

That sounds very promising.

I keep recommending the book Carbs and Cals to anyone who comes near me, but I found it really helpful. At first I thought the pictures would be a novelty but they aren't. It shows portion sizes and so it's very easy to compare one food against another.

Might be something quite straightforward for them?

Aha.

Now that's an idea for an Xmas pressie...He likes useful stuff.

What was it called again please?

I did look it up but I have bought a stack of books I just don't read. I like the internet too much...

Carbs and Cals by ??

I have the small pocket size version of 'Carbs & cals & protein & fat' - it's by Chris Cheyette and Yello Balolia. Sorry to butt in, but thought I'd answer the question seeing as I have the book right here by the computer.

Thanks for that Goldfish...

There seem to be a few books available.

1 of them is with flashcards which sounds good.

Which sort of book have you got?

There is also a pocket sized version....

What about the Carbs and Cals flashcards then ??

That sounds really simple to follow ??

It sounds like you're doing a great job in getting him on the right track! It might be worth figuring out low carb versions of his favourite foods, whether it be sandwiches, cake, whatever!

As for the trifle, I'm sure there's a way of getting some low carb alternatives to the ingredients. Sugar-free jelly is seriously a god send too! Nothing like a big bowl of jelly if you're not quite full after dinner. Whack some frozen berries in there and job's a good'un!

The good thing about the book rather than flash cards (which I haven't seen), ,is that similar foods are grouped together so it would be easier to make low carb/low cal choices. I suspect flash cards would get muddled (or lost in my house).

Amazon has a look inside feature so you could take a peek. Unless you have a bookshop near you when you can see it for yourself.

Thanks Cara, I will go for the book I think in that case.
