Hello

First, I am sorry this is my first post, however I haven’t felt I could add much to the debates. I am new to diabetes so my knowledge was poor, and I didn’t want to give people poor advice.

Anyway this is my journey so far.

15 March 2016, I was diagnosed with diabetes, type 2. This came about because of a routine eye test, if I hadn't of had that I would still be unaware I was diabetic. HBA1C was 92 (10.6), my weight was 86kg (13stone 6), my waist was 36inches. I am 50 years old and 5.9 (175cm). I was put on metformin 2 times a day.

My first reaction, as always is to read and become informed. I read the official advice, the NHS websites and this one. I read old threads here and new ones, to become better informed.

Two weeks after diagnosis (Can’t believe I have a jacked potato on the evening I was diagnosed), I started to reduce my carbs, and calories. First 100 carbs, and 1,200 calories. Started to exercise, which is something I hadn’t done for 35 years. I found sitting on bikes or rowing machines boring, but I rekindled a childhood love of swimming.

Over time, I have reduced the carbs and increased the calories . Special thanks for the tips on avocado and flax seed “porridge” for breakfast. Personally I didn’t fancy the bacon and eggs, because of problems with processed meat.

So now three months after being diagnosed, I am swimming a mile a day, and eating about 50 carbs a day, and about 2,000 calories). My weight is now 72kg (11stone 3), and my waist is 32inch.

The reason, for posting this here, I hear you cry!

This morning I got the result of my 3 month HBAIC and it was down to 39. Doctor was delighted, and was amazed that it was turned around from such a high level in just three months. Doctor have told me I can now come off the metformin.

So finally, thank you everyone and thanks for the avocado tip, and all the other advice here. This is a great support for people, even people like me who hide in the shadows.

Thank you for sharing this. My own 'start state' sounds very similar to you, and I too have reduced the calories and hit the 'phys' hard. I appreciate we are all different but hope I can get close to your results - I would be ecstatic!

P.S. If it's any consolation, after my appointment at which I was 'labelled' I came out of the surgery and scoffed a full choccy bar in the car - I was soooo hungry and all I had. I think back now I was in absolute shock - with what I came way with clearly not registering. That was my last and very likely the last one. I will ever have

Great news - well done @Kingofnowhere such an inspiring story. I bet you feel great too, well done on the weight loss. Keep up the good work and thank you for sharing - I know many, including myself, find these stories so helpful.

Hi

Thanks for the congratulations. Like many of you, being diagnosed as diabetic was a wake up call for me. Either I carried on as before, and just lived with what the future threw at me or I changed my lifestyle. Like many here, I chose the latter.

What I am amazed with, is the people who I know are diabetic who seem to just carry on. Still eat cakes, still no weight loss, and still no exercise. But then I did smoke, until 2000 despite knowing it was bad for me. It wasn't until I wanted to change that I did.

Anyway, here is my typical daily food, might give some ideas.

Breakfast
Large Avocado, 50g flax seed with "unsweetened" soya milk. 1 Pint unsweetened soya milk
2nd breakfast (after swimming)
Chicken drum stick, and some nuts (Almonds, Pecan, Brazil)
Lunch
tin of sardines (These are rich in Omega oils and as they are bottom of food chain and eat plants, low in mercury compared to other oily fish),
Large salad, (Leaves, tomatoes, celery, black beans, bell pepper)
Evening
Pint of unsweetened soya milk (I put cinnamon in...not sure any effect of diabetes but tastes nice)
Chicken or other meat
Broccoli
Cauliflower
Asparagus

When I was losing weight, I didn't have "2nd breakfast" and also had quorn "meats" instead of meat. Also the Soya milk was the light version.

The only other advise I can give, it to test. Try to keep the food the same, and then change one thing for a couple of days. The meter readings are "noisy" at the best of times, so one good reading after eating something doesn't mean that it is something you should eat.

Good luck to everyone!

Mark
