I always thought that it was:
Mares eat oats and does eat oats and little lambs eat ivy,
de diddle de divey do, wouldn't you.

I obviously never saw it written down. Silly me,

Sorry, Catherine, I wouldn't know one Elton John song from another, so I didn't get your lyrics at all. And Moogie, you were partly right, so here are the lyrics:

It was popular during the latter years of WW2, and why I remember such nonsensical lyrics, I'll never understand.
