Need a boost

I'm usually very upbeat, but not at the moment. I can't see a way out. Doctor has told me NOT to drop my Metformin. I've dropped all other antidiabetics, in favour of a low carb diet. I know that very longterm, Metformin is not recommended for damaged Kidneys and I have stage 3 Chronic Kidney disease.( what caused it?) I can't understand what to do to get out of this. I've been on Metformin 5 years, but what my doctor calls a low dose. 2 or 3 X 500 per day. I know generally it's a safe medicine. I know I can keep quite tight BGs on the diet alone. I have dropped to 2X to keep to the minimum.
Just give me a boost folks!

Hi Hana

Ahhh sending you a virtual hug.

I wish I could say chin up but at the moment I am sad too as we had to have one of our dogs put to sleep yesterday and its a bit upsetting but I am looking to the future, I will get myself sorted out and like you would like to reduce the tablets I take, some mornings I think I rattle!!

Does your GP know that you have reduced the metformin? Maybe if he is aware and can see what an improvement you have made with your diet he might back off a bit?

Hi fiona 35
I know how devastating having to have a dog put to sleep can be. I hope you have a good vet. I used to breed and show and have had the experience several times. Thankfully, the last one I lost, about 4 years ago died peacefully on her own bean bag in front of the fire, after battling congestive heart failure for nearly a year. Her sister, had to be PTS, because she had pancreatic cancer. The vet and I sat on the floor with our arms round each other sobbing for half an hour. ( woman vet!)
I don't show any more, but I have a little family, Grandmother, son and his daughter. the old girl is 13 1/2 and totally blind, but intrepid. I found her on the back of the sofa the other day. How she didn't fall, I don't know.
The younger ones have been driving me bonkers barking at fireworks every night. It's bad enough, they hurl abuse at any passers by, worse if there's a dog there. They particularly hate the assistance dog, who lives at the end of our road. He walks by in his self-assured way, beside his charge's mobility scooter and my lot yell rudely through the fence.

What can I say, except that I am feeling sad for you all and hope that soon you feel better again, its probably this time of year as well, the days are so gloomy, I am in London and we had to have the lights switched on all day its so grey and miserable.

Lots and lots of warm, comforting hugs

Hi Hahadr.
I thought I'd offer a 'clutcing at straws, hope moment' .
Maybe, your kidney problem will not get worse because of your excellent control. Therefor, taking a tiny dose of Metfromin (same as me actually and my HBA1c this week is 5.4) will be all you need to help you maintain that control.

You are an inspiration to me, I love your tenacity and bl*ody-mindedness and aspire to be like you!

I have actually decided that I ought to try doing without anyBG medication. I have made an appointment to see the DSN, who is a darling, to talk to her. Unfortunately the first available appointment is at the end of the month. I am tightening up on my diet too, particularly so that I can get my weightloss moving again. I have lost 17kg and could do with losing another 15 or so. I now have a BMI of 30. I have now been the same weight since about August and I'm getting frustrated, because I'm sticking to the low carb diet. I will keep on with the Metformin for a bit longer. Obviously if I become ill, I shall need BG medicine, but I keep pretty well.

Hi Hanna,

Sorry you are feeling down. Stage 3 is moderate impairment. Perhaps wiflib is correct, and this won't progress any further because of your exellent bg control. You truly are an example to us all. I enjoy your posts and especially your low carb recipes. I am glad you have a good DSN to discuss things with. Perhaps it will be possible to come of the Metformin and see how things go.
Sending you a big cuddle ((((((((hanna))))))) :)
