Need a Little advice.........

As i said, what you see is what you get on a UK label. The term net carb is just not applicable to values from the UK.
I don't have the Collins carb counter so I can't comment except to say that in the past it has thrown up some anomalies which have been discussed on here before
The best book source in the UK is supposed to be the Calorie Carb and Fat bible. This uses UK sources. Alternatively there is a photographic carb counter called carbs and cals.

Just don't deduct fibre from labels in the UK.

And here is one of the posts I was looking for: the third post is from a dietitian

( can't find the excel Maccance and Widdowson mentioned anymore. It's moved or been taken offline. I do have an excel version but don't use it for everyday carb counting, )

Hi Jude

I've probably come into this discussion a bit late, but as someone who has been diagnosed nearly five years, I can tell you my experience.

In my book, you really don't know how much pancreatic function you have. You could very low carb and still not get the results that the newly diagnosed get who have been picked up early. Thinking about how much sweet fizzy drinks I used to drink and how many bouts of thrush I used to get, I'm sure I was going round for at least five years as an undiagnosed diabetic.

Looking at what I eat and how many meds I take it is a balancing act of getting the levels right for you, that will avoid as many complications as possible.

I probably eat between 75 - 100g carbs a day and take 2550mg metformin (3 x 850mg) and 40mg gliclazide (which is a lot more than a lot of people on here take), have problems losing weight (although many years pre-diagnosis I was five stone heavier than I am now).

I too have problems with IBS-D, although this is mostly cured by cutting wheat out of my diet (a side effect of this is that you eat less carbs).

I thought about doing the Newcastle diet and drank a few of the slimfast shakes, they made my stomach hurt, so I decided that wasn't for me.

I'm happy with my levels at the moment and my last HbA1c was 5.4%. I wish I had found this site when I was first diagnosed and cut the carbs then, but hindsight is a wonderful thing ...

Diabetes is not a race or a comparison with someone else. We can aspire to someone else's BS levels or weight loss, but we are unique and what works for someone, may not be appropriate for you. All we can do is our best and avoid the sneaky complications that diabetes can bring. We have two choices, less carbs or more meds, but our pancreas may already be worn out, from bad dietary advice in the past or choices we have made.

All the best

I agree with completely. Sometimes I wonder if I find it harder because I have been diagnosed for 8 years so probably I have less to save than someone who has just been diagnosed.

Thank you both for your comments which were encouraging and it was particularly good for me to hear from another IBS sufferer - I posted in the past trying to find someone dealing with both and never had any feedback.
I have a couple of further queries and hope you can help. Firstly I have read quite a few posts where people are talking about the breakdown of their daily food in percentages - eg - 20carbs/20protein/60fat. Can you please explain to me how this is worked out and do you both work on a system like that?
Secondly, have been lower carbing for almost 4 weeks now, still no improvement in bgs or weight. However my querie is - I am always tired. I did think that this is probably all my medications and in particular the Byetta - this still gives me nausea daily but recently the tiredness has become worse! Dietwise is there anything I can do about this? Briefly I am eating _
Breakfast - Greek yogurt with fruit
Lunch _ Home made fruit smoothie or bacon and egg
Dinner Meat with very few vegs (dont like them) or salad folowed by fruit and fresh cream
I drink loads of water and nescafe latte which I put cream in sometimes.

I look forward to hearing from you both - many thanks in advance. :)

Hi Judith, I can give you an idea of how the carb, protein, fat ratio's are worked out. I gave Steve a days menu, and he did me a donut to show the percentages.
