Need advice on how to control blood levels and what to eat

Re: Need advice on how to control blood levels and what to e

Hey, I often have months where my nloods go all out and get some kind of revenge on me, I just see it as a test, and go back to basics, I generally eat what want to, obviously within reason, I have a great gp at the minute whom has helped me loads and not been judgemental about anything, although at one point he said I waz just being lazy lol, I don't know if it will help you but there's a book called thin like a pancreas and I swear by it, I'd highly recommend it to any diabetic. Before I read this book I knew what diabetes was but never inderstood how it worked, so to speak, it helped me understsnd everything about diabetes and how insulin works, you should give it a read and see how you feel afterwards, it helped myself so who knows it may help you too.

Hello Carol
Maybe you could give some examples of your meals so folk can comment?

Hi. Yes, do let us know your typical meals and we'll try to help. Note that just eating 'healthy' following the advice you get in the media etc is not enough just in case you are following general healthy advice. As diabetics have a problem using carbohydrates properly you need to reduce the intake of these to an amount that brings your blood sugar in line. Perhaps you are already doing this but do let us know more.

Hi carol, from time to time I find my bloods misbehaving. As previous poster said go back to basics. Might be your insulin requirements have changed. what I do every couple of months is do an overnight basal test. Eat at 5pm latest, no snacks after or sugary drinks. Take a reading at 11 pm before bed and set alarm every 2 hours to test. This gives me an overnight basal profile and adjust basal if needed depending on results. If thats right I test my quick acting ratios by having my meals knowing the carb content, test levels 2 hours after and before next meal. If I'm happy with my levels great, of hypo between meals less insulin next time, if too high more insulin next time. Timing of insulin is also an important factor, the higher the gi content of a meal the longer I inject before eating. Lots of things to consider lol.
Hope u get then sorted soon :)

I notice in your first post Carol that you said you'd lost weight after diagnosis but slipped back into some bad habits, weight gain can mean an increase in insulin requirements so you should start with the basics as Brett says.

The book Think Like a Pancreas as suggested by Blueeyed is an excellent read and full of useful information for us type 1's
