I would love it if someone would be able to answer my question.
Can diabetes be diagnosed with just one blood test? I am due to have the test on Friday , I have lost tons of weight (fat and muscle) rapidly. I have untreated PCOS which I know puts me at a significant risk of developing
diabetes. I have developed high blood pressure, rapid heart beat, circulation problems and high cholesterol. I know this is metabolic syndrome from the untreated PCOS. I eat healthy, low carb, avoid sugar ( I'm 5 foot 4 and 9 stone) ,the more I eat the more weight I lose . I'm starting to look very gaunt with the amount of fat and muscle loss but my doctor thinks I'm a hypochondriac .....in short she is a dismissive *****. My symptoms are- peeing every 10-15 mins, thirst, itchy skin, dizziness, weakness, feeling faint, shaking fatigue, sweet smelling breath and sweat ( nauseating repulsive smell- not nice sweet!), vision loss (temporary) and blurred vision .I moved doc because they were dismissive , now I have managed to by some stroke of bad luck found a even worse doc so I bought a glucose monitor , my readings have been lowest 6.2 to 11.00 fasting and 5.1 to 9.00 two hours after food the average is around 7.5 ( only been consistently checking for a week as the strips are really expensive. Please help I need some good advice as I know there is something amiss, you don't feel this **** for no good reason! :dead: :arghh: :( :bigtears:Thanks lovely, intelligent , knowledgeable people!

There is one count -hba1c - that reflects your AVERAGE blood sugar level in the past 3 months or so. If that's too high then I'd think that definitely means something is wrong.
in some countries patients will also be checked on fasting blood sugar level and 2 hrs after taking a measured amount of glucos drink. cos some people have one of these 2 looking normal but the other abnormal.

But the causes of high blood sugar level may not be simply diabetes. There may be other illness that cause pancreas to work abnormally.

But i am no doctor. Only sharing what I know.. Hope you'll see more informative replies soon.

I dont know if this is unusual but my fasting blood is always high and bloods after food always comes down.Is this a bit strange?

Hello and welcome
In relation to your fasting level- google dawn phenomena and have a read- it is not unusual.

The HbA1c test will as others have said give you an average- so start with that. Your symptoms mean something is wrong but it may or may not be diabetes.

Good luck I hope you find the use of your symptoms and get the help you need.

Thanks for your reply. I've been forced to go private as my doctor is ignoring all my symptoms. So I'm being forced to go into debt to attempt to pinpoint the source of the problem. My average over the last 2 and a half is months is 7.8 .I'm getting conflicting information about whether this means I have diabetes or not from looking online on different sights. My head feel like mush with all the conflicting information.

So what were the results of the test you had done? (Hopefully an hba1c). Are you still losing weight? Do you still have the other symptoms? Is there a reason your PCOS isn't being treated?

My average over the last 2 and a half is months is 7.8 .

Those levels, if accurate (home meters have quite a large possible inaccuracy) suggest you might be borderline diabetic, but I wouldn't expect diabetes at those levels to give you many symptoms. (eg thirst typically happens when you start to run consistent bg levels over 10mmol/L). So there may be something else going on.

Also, I would expect the symptoms you describe, if related to untreated diabetes, to have escalated over a period of 2 months, though it is possible that going low carb is holding things at bay.

Good luck. I hope you get a resolution to your symptoms soon.
