just given my daughter 8 units of insulin instead of 4 (mixed up morning and evening) Can't believe I have done it and judging by my anxiety at the moment, doubt this will happen again. Just spoke to A & E doctor who told me that I need to stay up all night and test her every hour. She said my daughter could stay over night at the hospital, but they would just be monitoring like I would at home. She said it does not matter what she eats before bed, as she can still have a hypo. If I take her to hospital its about 10 miles away, and its late, bed in an hour. Or should I take her. Would she be safer in hospital??? Any advise??? Hayley

Hi Hayley

What the A&E say is correct, If you feel more comfortable take your daughter to A&E, they won't mind at all...

To get through the night, you could do with a good amount of lucozade, coke etc to keep bumping her sugars up if required, and keep a good eye on her levels... Insulin normally works over a 4-5 hour period peaking around the 2 hours mark...

Just to reasure you that you are not the only person nor the last person to inject too much insulin, a common mistake is inject quick acting instead of background...

She will be OK, just needs close monitoring, to enusre that she doesn't hypo, as I already said if you are concerned then pop her up to the hospital I assure they won't mind at all.

Thanks. I think I will keep her at home, and monitor every hour. she has certainly enjoyed chocolate spread sandwiches just now. Might, wake her in night and give her some milk, just to be on safe side.

I'm glad to hear you positve..

I bet she did lol

It is frightening when it happens, but if you've got enough sweet things around you'll be alright...

Take care..

Staying up with her is a good idea.

If i overdose on insulin, which occassionally happens when im not paying attention properly... i eat something that would be the equivilant to the amount of insulin i took.

so for me 4 units would be 60g CHO. so if i took 8 by mistake, i'd eat something with 60g cho in there... that way i know i've covered the extra insulin.

I guess it may not be so easy to get a child to eat if they dont want to. But i thought i'd share none the less... I think it's better to be covered with proper carbs than to keep 'topping up' with glucose drinks or tabs to get through the over dose.
