need help in treating sons highs

My 7 yr old son was diagnosed two months ago, he is on twice daily injections of humalin m3. over last three / four days his bloods have been steadily rising. Today at lunch he was 15.9, before dinner 23.1 and now is 26.4. i have given him his usual dose of humalin and an unit of novorapid all before dinner but this doesn't seem to have bought him down, infact hes higher now. I'm unsure whether to give him more novorapid or to just leave him. incidentally ketones are slightly raised but nothing to concern me but he is complaining of painful stomach and feeling sick. Any advice would be most appreciated thanks :D

Hi.

If my sugar was that high when I tested then I would take more novo rapid in order to bring it down as I would feel pretty awful with it that high. if you do that then obviously keep checking his blood sugar to check how it is doing. I would start off giving a little bit and seeing how that goes - you can always give him more a bit later, but you don't want to give him so much he goes hypo.

My sugar tends to suddenly go higher when I am getting / have a cold - is he ill at all?

Do you have a nurse you could contact if t remains high tomorrow? They will be able to help you to adjust his insulin if needed.

Painful stomach/feel sick...gastro? Or ketones? Read and heard of ketones causing pains in stomach & feeling sick lately. Test them again in case rising? Agree...needs quick acting insulin to bring bg down before ketones add to the problem. Do you know his insulin sensitivity I.e. how many mmols a unit of insulin will bring him down by? (For example 1u will lower my bg by 2.8 I think. It's around that anyway)

Do growth spurts alter insulin requirements I wonder?

Thankyou. The DN suggets 1 unit to bring him down 10mmol although this doesnt seem to bringing him down that much. He has finally settled after more novorapid and is at 7.6 so a lot better. I have left a mess for the dn so hopefully will speak tomorrow about his insulin. I will be keeping an exyra eye on him overnight as 99% of the time after a big high he has a sudden rebound low.

Ahhh, please ignore the post on other thread...about popping a couple of units in whilst he's asleep! I thought his bg before bed was 26!

Oh good that's he's come down! Poor little man :( yep I bet you're poised for a hypo now, hope it doesn't come and he remains stable thru night.

Good luck & hope dsn is helpful tomorrow. Hope you manage to get a few hours sleep somewhere during the night!!!

Hi, good old Humilin M3 iam still on this diagnosed at 10 and nearly 23 years later still on it. I spose its not for everyone I like to be in routine but as for me as a child using M3 it was pretty much breakfast snack dinner snack tea snack then something to eat just before bed, if I did any sports id have a chocolate bar instead of adjusting my insulin all the time. Then for me I used to have a little extra M3 at evening as I wasn't as active at night. Then just slowly increased my insulin. By unit or 2 at a time. Like I said its not very flexible but ive always like to be in routine anyway.
