I do not have diabetes
so here is my story. my name is joe im 29 years old i used to be 24 stone and abuse carbs and sugar, i lost loads of weight a couple of years ago in late 2012! in late 2012 i also gave up energy drinks and alcohol and takeaways i was feeling very ill in late 2012 for a number of reasons im not sure of! anyway i started to feel good in around may 2013 and pretty much felt really good so good in fact i decided to reintroduce sugar and caffeine two things i had quit and they where not a part of my life! i started having them again in late august at first didn't feel to bad then like 7 weeks in sometime in November i started to feel like **** like there was a buzz or hum throughout my whole body so i quit them both there and then, i spent a couple of weeks going through withdrawals, but then something weird started to happen, if i missed a meal i started to go clammy palmed sweat from under the arms stare in to space get red eyes that looked glazed i would feel uneven on my feat like lightheaded and also dizzy and like i couldn't get my words out ! i soon relised that this feeling was happening just before dinner and i f i missed breakfast and alo many time at around 11 at night when i was hours after my dinner the biggest thing io noticed was that eating always made the feeling go away so i would eat some birds eye potato waffles every time it happened and would feel better! but i would always be left feeling weird maybe the release of adrenalin! so i purchased a blood glucose reader and my fasting blood upon waking was 4.8 during one of the milder episodes i tested and was 4.8 again while feeling ill at around 11 one day i tested 4.8 i eat some waffles and then my blood sugar went up to like 7.8 i cant remember exactly but within the hour it had dropped to like 5.8 so i knew it was coming down so stopped testing! i went to hospital they tested my blood sugar heart blood pressure ekg temperature and said im as fit as a fiddle and all the tests where perfect, so i came home done some research and decided there is a possibility i have reactive hypoglycemia! i was eating carbs everyday on Christmas day i would wake up eat some gluten free high carb sausage rolls and within the hour feel terrible but then miraculous after dinner on a full stomach start to feel fine again! sick and tired of feeling **** one minute then ok the next and having doctors think i am making this all up i decided to go on a what i conciser to be low glycemic index diet and even on the first day i felt better the second day i felt good again the day after that still was getting any of the low feeling episodes so i figured it would take some time to adjust! heres what happened yesterday... i woke up had some gluten free porridge two hours later had some peanut butter for lunch i had chicken and cheese with some cherries before i reached dinner i had some more peanut butter was still feeling to to bad but not great for dinner mashed sweet potato and steak with home made gravy and greens then for some reason at 9 i cooked 5 sausages miked with fried onions mushrooms and a load of brown rice thinking i would eat a little and save some it was so nice i eat a whole frying pan full of it and felt kind of bloated at around 5 past 12 after watching the midnight fireworks i stood up to get some water and my legs felt fuzzy and heavy my eyes felt weird i started over the next five minutes to feel light headed and like i couldn't get my words out then (really scary) my legs started uncontrollably shaking and trembling my eyes especially the left one had turned red and i felt as if i was going to pass out breathing went all funny like a panic attack! i eat some peanut butter and cherries and within ten minute it went away leaving me with a bit of a headache and feeling scared! please please please someone help me whats wrong with me what are all these events what do they mean do i have a mysterious illness even if someone answers you please answer as well i would like as much feed back and input as humanly possible! thanks guys!

ask your dr but..
IMO you're lucky 4.8-7.8 is perfectly normal, it can go down to 3.5 and still be normal..20% of fat people have good health, life's a funny thing,
IMO you don't apear to have insulin resistance, perhaps get your thyroid checked out better than it has been

Hi joeftw, from what you posted ,your carb intake is very erratic, this would give you the symptoms you've been getting, we need you to give us a breakdown of all that you eat over two weeks, keep a record and then we can see what's actually happening to you ! Most of those who are managing their bs's well are on lchf regime, and are aiming for bs of 5.5. Can you give us your current hbac1 ? And your bmi ? Don't worry this can be sorted ! Many of us came from a position that you are experiencing now!

Sorry you are feeling so ill. Hope you don't mind me asking but what do you weigh?
Hope you don't mind me suggesting this but you might be better ditching the sugar and the starchy carbs. You obviously have concerns amount of sugar and reading between the lines your weight. These are things which are relatively easy to resolve but you will need some support. When I was diagnosed with diabetes last year I had given up as I felt that i didn't eat that much but felt permanently hungry and fat. I wasn't fat, I was obese. I am now just very overweight. But it's going. I have lost 4 stone.
I came on here in the beginning in a state of panic. I am going to give you the same advice I was given and you can make your own choices. I can't promise it will work for you but here goes:
Have a read of www.dietdoctor.com
This is called low carb high fat. What you are doing is ditching sugar and starchy carbs. You get your energy from the fat in meat, eggs, fish, cheese, cream and nuts. You need less of it to feel full. You feel a bit rubbish whilst the sugar leaves your system and this can last up to a week. I found that this bright my bs down and stabilised it quite quickly. I then felt much better. I stayed off the booze for 3 months and watched the weight come off. I also kept a food diary. I rarely eat fruit. It contains lots of fructose so just some berries now and then. I also tested my fasting bs and then tested every half hour up to 2 hours after food every day for a month.
Good luck and hugs

Joe Understand you are not feeling great. If you are really really concerned then you MUST seek urgent medical advice. Apart from that I have found that once I have things under control that does not mean I can go off and eat random foods that may affect my BS levels or eat other foods in huge portions. The impact is that I feel very groggy, very sleepy, I know why that has happened. My solution is to be consistent in what I eat and then I do not get such erratic reactions. but THATS me mate. Brown rice sends my BS levels through the roof. What was in the sausages? You will have to check before and 2 hours after and manage and adjust just like you have before. I am sure it will settle down and hope its nothing mre than he foods you have eaten. Best of luck

How tall are you and what build are you? I used the following to work out height, weight and BMI but it's different from the NHS one. I think this one is more realistic.
http://uk.atkins.com/get-started/calculate-your-bmi.html
I am guessing that you probably might need to come down some more in weight although when you think what you did weigh you have done phenomenally well!
Have you had a look at the diet doc website? It makes very interesting reading!

I think that the whole thing can be connected. If I were you, I would be tempted to low carb, keep a food diary and measure bloods. When you've got rid of all the sugar from your system, then you could gradually reintroduce things one item at a time, testing rigorously to see what the impact is on your blood sugar. If you low carb and your physical symptoms go away then you've answered your own questions. This was my approach along with the support and advice from the lovely peeps here. You must bear in mind that most of us are not medically trained so we can only tell you what we have done or might do in your position.
The other thing to bear in mind is that different foods impact upon us all in different ways. For example I cannot tolerate bread or rice or pasta but potatoes in small quantities are ok. Others can eat small quantities of bread and or porridge.
Just tapped your stats into the link I sent you and you could probably do with dropping 1 stone.
Let us know how you get on and good luck!

Hi and welcome,

Reactive hypoglycaemia is surprisingly common, but the blood glucose readings you mentioned are within the normal range. Have you been testing recently?

I would definitely go to your doctor, explain your concerns, and then consider their response/advice.

If you are still not happy, the first thing I would look at is your diet. If you do have any glucose tolerance issues, all those carbs won't be helping... @Scandichic 's diet doctor link is excellent.

Ok. Apologies firstly as I'm responding on my phone, so auto correct may make jibberish of this.

My comments would've that you are really punishing your body by stuffing yourself - irrespective of any potential underlying condition.

I would suggest you plan a few days of full, nutritional meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner) and eat them at regular intervals, stopping when you feel full.

I also suggest that as you have a meter you test your blood before you eat, plus 2 hours after. Additionally, if you feel I'll test then too, and record all you eat and drink and all of your blood results.

People with digestive, metabolic or endocrine issues may react badly to the way you eat, but having given a lot of carbs, sugar etc up your body will have got used to functioning differently and may simply be protesting against something you are reintroducing.

If you do as I suggest and you have some seriously wonky results, at least you have something meaningful to discuss with your doctor. Pitching up and telling him you feel off if you skip meals or stuff yourself doesn't give him much to go on. My OH would probably feel rough if he did as you have done and as far as we know he's as fit as a flea.

Keep asking questions, but also please build up some accurate data.

they do seem to be within the normal range but maybe they are dropping too quickly due to recently abusing carbs the rapid decline in blood sugar may make me feel bad untill i raise the blood sugar again right ?

i agree my eating has been erratic and i need to and aim trying my best to fix it before now everything i eat was high crabs so i hope its some kind of temporary hypoglycemia due to my blood sugar falling too fast even though it hits a normal level!

It's possible. But the answer is not to stuff yourself with carbs again, to bring your blood glucose back up.

The answer (if that is what is happening) would be to avoid the high carbs in the first place. Then the vicious cycle doesn't happen.

As none of your tests are outside normal I'd be wary of talking about hypoglycaemia, but the idea that you haven't been eating sensibly and your body is protesting seems like a decent starting point.

Is reiterate my suggestion you plan and moderate your eating, whilst testing your bloods and keeping a food diary and review that after a short while.

That said, if you are sufficiently concerned you should book an appointment to see your GP and build your data in the meantime.

Good luck with it all.
