Need help/Someone to talk to - struggling to cope.

Dear Sophie,

My heart went out to you when I read your post, I am a type 1 diabetic aged 42 and was diagnosed when I was 10. I understand what you are going through but i cannot stress how important it is for you to seek someone in the medical profession who will sit and listen to you. I think it is harder for women as our hormones are generally all over the place and taking insulin which is a hormone adds to our being up and down. At present you are a young woman with a lot of pressures of life itself, but you are also very clever and you know the dangers you are putting yourself in. When I was your age I rebelled against my diabetes and for the next 10 years did not look after myself properly, I also lied to doctors about my blood test results thinking I was okay . Luckily for me I haven't really had serious problems, however a few years ago I was overweight and my cholesterol became very high, my doctor wanted to put me on statins but I refused knowing it was what I was doing was the problem. From that day I started to eat correctly and exercise regularly and now I feel great. I also saw a Diabetic Specialist Nurse who was fantastic and helped me loads. Also I don't if you are aware but most diabetics do suffer with depression as a result of this condition and there is help for this. So what I am saying to you Sophie is that at present you are changing from a child to a young woman and that itself is hard without having to cope with an illness on a daily basis, but i can promise you thing will become better as you learn more about yourself. I think it is important that you talk about what you are feeling, and you may think your parents do not understand but as a parent of a fifteen year old girl who thinks the same as you I can assure you that they do . This is all part of growing up, my mom and dad used to call me the rotweiller , as i was always snarling that nobody understood me! Anyway Sophie please be honest with the doctors you have nothing to be ashamed of, they are there to help you. You have taken the first step by being honest on this forum so you can take the next one and get the help.

I wish you all the best and take care of you

Love Rachel x
