Any suggestions? Cheers

Hello I am newly diagnosed as well ,what has helped me so far is knocking bread ,spuds, pasta & breakfast cereals on the head .eating more fish and increasing certain vegs I also look at the back of anything I buy for the carb content as keeping it very low has helped .i have just got some cauli rice as a alternative but havnt tried it yet but it's meant to be good

Hi Ted, I'm just experimenting with Low Carb Diet. My Glucose readings had been up to 22. Now I have them back down with the highest reading over the last week being 8.6. I'm consuming eggs, fish (my favourite being salmon), mixed veg (have replaced mashed potato with steamed mashed cauliflower with a little swede and a couple of knobs of butter). Lentils and chickpeas of course are good. If curried, I make more and leave out the rice or naan. The salmon lends itself well in a curry sauce. Happy to give you the recipe if you want. Whilst at work, I just take with me a couple of apples and carrots and a couple of handfuls of mixed nuts. Humus is also OK. Avoid alcohol ( that's been a little easier since hearing about there not being a safe limit on it's consumption ). I hope this helps a little. Fred

Hi Ted. I was diagnosed as Type 2 last week and as a vegan I was really concerned about what I could eat. Like Lennie I am now an avid reader of food labels and much to my horror there seems to be sugar in everything!

I have always enjoyed trying new flavours and I am finding a lot of Mediterranean and Arabic meals can be very tasty, easy to prepare and (as long as you are careful) low carb.

I have stopped eating spuds, pasta and rice and invested in a spiraliser so I can create veggies that look like noodles. It really works and tastes good too. Courgette spaghetti looks pretty weird if you are used to the real thing but, it can taste pretty good.

I assume you are a meat eater so I can't advise on that part as I haven't touched meat for over 30 years. Just a thought .... If you ever fancy a break from meat then Quorn products maybe worth trying and available in most UK supermarkets. They are pretty high in protein and could offer a few options that may be worth a shot.

If you decide to try it then it may be worth bouncing your decision around the forum. As I said, I am a real newbie and the older, more experienced members here seem to have a limitless level of knowledge, so I am sure they will give you some great ideas.

Hope things work out and if you find any veggie recipes let me know

@Welshman1952 - There is a Vegan thread. Go to the top of this page and click on Forums, then scroll down to FOOD and NUTRITION, then click on Vegetation Diet Forum and this will take you to Vegan threads. Hope this is of some interest.:)

check out the Glycemic Index and Glycemic load on the Internet it was very helpful to me and easy to understand there is one that is easy to understand each product is given a number of being low, medium or high which helps with your decisions. I think the link is www.raystrand.com give it a try.
