Hi all have been trying to loose weight since xmas and improve my glucose control.I have been cutting down on carbs,e.g not having potatoes and reducing bread, have been keeping a food diary and my average daily carb intake ranges between 130g to 160g and my calorie intake is between 1,200 and 1,500 when ime being good, haha!Having read alot of the posts on the forum it seems that to loose weight I need to drop my carb intake to no more than 100g but realy need some help as to how this can be achieved,as am realy stuck for ideas on what I can eat to get that reduction.I work so i usualy have for breakfast either porridge with blueberries or a piece of burgen bread toasted,i have to take a packed lunch and then have a cooked evening meal.So any advice on how to get my carbs down would be much appreciated.
Many thanks

Viv will probably be along soon with a link to her "modified Atkins diet", in case she isn't, here's the link:

Viv has a very low carb ration; others don't go quite so low. I'm on about 50 to 60% of the guideline daily amounts, which for a woman is 125 to 150 grams of carbs per day, for a man 150 to 180. However, I'm not trying to lose weight, I settled on those figures which give me good blood sugar control. If I needed to lose weight, I'd probably need to go lower.
You could modify Viv's Modified diet  to bring it up to 100grams a day if you wanted to start there and see how it goes. You can always go lower later if you need. Remember, a diabetic diet is really for life, so you need to settle into something you can live with, that gives you the desired weight (eventually; no rush) and gives you control over your sugar levels.

Hi binney
I cant help with breakfast I think that is the most difficult meal if you are going out to work but for lunch how bout home made soup you can take it in a flask if you dont have a micro , or cheese and ham try to get your head out of the "sandwich" and wrap the cheese in slices of ham or chicken with a bit of crisp lettuce and a small cherry tom . There are lots of recipes in the food section of this forum For evening meals I eat fish or grilled steak or chops with lots of veg and I find that swede and celeriac cooked and chopped or mashed together with butter and pepper is a good substitute for spuds .Make lots of different veg so you dont get bored with a large helping of cauli for instance
.Soon you will get into the idea of eating less carbs but still eating filling foods and by experimenting a bit you will enjoy your meals and the satisfaction of being more healthy.

Hi Binney

Grazer and Carol have some great tips there, and thanks, grazer, for posting the link to "my" diet. That version has about 20g - 35g of carb daily - a bit low for some.

If you have a read of it, it contains a list of foods you can safely eat on a low-carb diet. Get yourself a carb counter book - eg Collins do one in the Gem series. It does have some errors, but it's portable. Then you can add extra carbs in, from fresh, unprocessed, low GI foods, to the level of carbs you want to eat.

You can still eat some processed foods - eg some canned soups, even some ready meals - but read the labels and work out how many carbs they contain.

I eat a 2-egg omelette for breakfast every day; lunch is usually a salad with cold meat, chicken or fish, and my evening meal will be meat or fish with vegetables. You can easily take a salad with you for lunch in a plastic box - you can even make it the night before and leave it in the fridge.

I have been know to eat cold chicken salad for breakfast - it's really refreshing, but maybe not in January

Good luck! let us know how you get on.

Good luck with it, it's been great for me.
I prefer Celariac cut up like chips and cooked in the oven. Yummy with Steak and eggs
